"My approach to my subject matter is an eclectic one, and my work has been compared to that of several different individuals. I do, however, often introduce a documentary element into my images which tends to differentiate my work from that of other landscape specialists.
I have published the Wild Wales / Cymru Wyllt postcard range since 1987, covering largely the Welsh National Parks and north Ceredigion. A calendar has also been published annually since 2006.
I distinguish my commercial output - the postcards and calendar - from my personal work, which tends to be less immediately saleable. It often concentrates on a geographical area or an environmental topic, and allows me to explore that in more depth. These personal projects often culminate in an exhibition or the publication of a book, or both.
My first exhibition was Skylines in 1986/7, followed by After the Wildwood, which toured throughout the UK for a two year period beginning in 1990.
My first book, Wales - The Lie of the Land, was published in 1995, followed by the Snowdonia National Park Guide (2000), Heart of the Country (2003) and Blaenau - Between Earth and Heaven (2007). In most cases I work with a writer or poet, in these examples Nigel Jenkins, Merfyn Williams, the late William Condry and Gwyn Thomas respectively.
Photographs from the four books mentioned above have also been exhibited in various Welsh venues, and subsequently added to the National Library of Wales' photographic collection.
I also have a large photographic library of my own, and my work has been used in many Welsh and UK publications. I have undertaken commissions for the Wales Tourist Board and Forest Enterprise amongst others, and could still be working for the WTB had it not been for their insistence on obtaining copyright from the photographer!
I fell into professional photography by a very roundabout route. My education was mainly in the sciences, but I chose to study psychology at University. It seemed like a good idea at the time!
During those years I became interested in and committed to environmental issues, and for a number of years tried to build a career in nature conservation.
This was to prove unsuccessful, and I turned to photography in what seemed to be a last resort.
Fortunately I did have some visual skills, and the memory of some unsuccessful years earlier in my life proved to be the impetus that I needed to succeed in photography.
I am still involved with environmental issues. I was a founder member and activist with Friends of Cardigan Bay from 1989 until 1997, and for several years have campaigned - successfully, so far - against an industrial estate planned for a village near Aberystwyth. I also takes part in several BTO voluntary bird survey schemes in Ceredigion.
