Artist Profile - Harriet Hill

Harriet Hill discovered felt after graduating from Art School in Cardiff. Now living in Gladestry in Powys, she uses this versatile material to bring together her interest in art, design, fabric and sculpture.

What is your name?: Harriet Hill
Where do you work?: Gladestry, Powys
How did you get started as an artist?: I completed a fine art degree in Cardiff in 1987 and have worked with fabrics since young. Discovering felt enabled me to bring together my interests in art, design, fabrics and sculpture.
I have been practicing full time since 2002, developing and exhibiting my felt work and leading arts workshops in schools and community groups.
How would you describe your work?
Felt sculptures and wall pieces that play along the boundaries between art and function.
Do you draw inspiration from your local area?: Indirectly, ideas for pieces are often inspired by objects found in my surroundings.
Where has your work been shown?: Oriel Washington Gallery, Penarth Chelsea Crafts Fair 2005, London Royal Exchange, Manchester Galanthus Gallery, Herefordshire Llantarnham Grange Arts Centre, Cwmbran Oriel Cambria Gallery, Tregaron

I like the felt stone / blue spot - made by Harriet Hill. This artwork reminds me of my friend Sabine Lichtenberger in Germany. She loves felting, too: this is what she sent me to Wales as a present. I will tell Sabine about Harriet's works since she loves felting - and work like this.
