  • What is your name?: Gary Hiscott
  • Where do you work?: Retired church worker - now in Drenewydd
  • How did you get started as an artist?: My work has delevoped slowly over the years. I have always had a pencil in my hand, through a variety of jobs. These included being a draughtsman, school teacher, patent illustrator, church pastoral worker and graphic designer as part of a large church.
  • How would you describe your work?
The most important element is colour - either subtle and controlled or painted with freedom.
  • Do you draw inspiration from your local area?: In Birmigham my inspiration came from memories of Wales. The closest I could get to seeing Wales was from the Malvern Hills. Having moved to Wales I am thrilled by weather, hills, towns & villages, people and mountains large and small.
  • Where has your work been shown?: Birmingham - solo exhibition Kings Heath Library, Sutton Coldfield Little Theatre. Many times at the Royal Birmingham Socity of Artists -RBSA Drenewydd - Library 'solo exhibition'. Gateway, Shrewsbury - 'Open'
  • Do you have any exhibitions coming up?: First exhibition of 2008. The Gallery Theatr Hafren (Y Drenewydd - Newtown, Powys) Feb - Mar - Apr 2008.
  • Any thing else we should know?: I paint as a commited Christian and believe that for me painting is a form of prayer. I paint as a Christian rather than painting Christian subjects.

I love canvases crammed with colour and the amazing contrast in styles that Gary has. I can see why you moved to Wales.

What I like is the unique shape of the world as you depict it - there seems to be depth and mystery and humour all blended together in the scenes you paint - makes me want to talk to the artist about what he is thinking and feeling. Keep it up, Gary - I enjoyed looking at this, especially the piece that depicts the tree against the backdrop of the sky in golden browns and reds. That is remarkable. Is it for sale?

I love your use of dynamic colour. It evokes strong passion and emotion. I particularly like the contrasting Commercial Street images as one depicts a quick, fleeting glance and the other the spirit and personality of Newtown. Pastoral actually makes me want to lie down in the field and watch the clouds fly by. I look forward to attending a forthcoming exhibition of yours, thank you for delighting my eyes and imagination.
