  • Examples of Caroline's work...

  • What is your name?: Caroline Mackley

  • Where do you work?: I am an artist living in Mid Wales , near the town of Rhayader - "Gateway to the Lakes " of the Elan Valley. I work from home where I have a beautiful garden with views down the Wye Valley towards Gwastedyn Hill. I also paint regularly with the Rhayader Art Group which meets weekly for informal painting sessions - new members are always welcome.

  • How did you get started as an artist?: I have drawn and painted all my life; my first formal art education occured when I took Art as my main subject for my B.Ed in 1975. Having retired and moved to Wales several years ago, I took up hill-walking, and, whilst stopping for a sandwich and to admire the view, I took out my sketchbook, and began to record some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! I am now addicted to walking and sketching; and producing drawings and paintings of Mid Wales.

  • How would you describe your work?
I work mainly with pen and ink, and pastels; followed by watercolour, line and wash - or a mixture of all! I have been doing a series of drawings and paintings of old cottages and farm buildings in the Elan and Claerwen Valleys; but I also enjoy flower studies in pastel or mixed media, and landscapes in watercolour.

  • Do you draw inspiration from your local area?: Tha scenery of Mid Wales provides the main inspiration for my work: old buildings, farms, gateways and sheds; rivers, lakes and hills; flowers and trees - all sketched and painted throughout the year.

  • Where has your work been shown?: My work has been shown mainly at Rebecca Riginals Gallery in Rhayader; and at various exhibitions in Mid Wales: Ceredigion Summer Exhibition, Lingen Art Society Exhibition, Minerva Gallery in Llanidloes. My most recent exhibition was a joint one with Angela Lewis from Rhayader, at the Elan Valley Visitor Center. My work is on display at Rebecca Riginals Gallery at present.
