Arts - Artist Directory Submission
What is your name?: Blue MacAskill
Where do you work?: National Library of Wales
How did you get started as an artist?: My tutor at camberwell College of Art, said I should think about being an artist. And I did, by the time I did my Masters in 2004, I knew it was what I absolutely had to do.
How would you describe your work?
I like to examine the Human Condition in all its veins. Our secrets and code of behaviour. I make films and photographical portraits on the details of daily life and how it describes us.
Do you draw inspiration from your local area?: Yes, I people watch all the time, I love the vast beauty of landscapes, but it is not what I use to work with. I get inspired by the effect of relationships and meetings. So I am more a town and city person, every action you do, has a little effect on the world around you, when we live in more built up areas.
Where has your work been shown?: I have shown my films in screenings from South Africa to The Netherlands. I have shown in some galleries in London, like Peer and The residence, in East London. A breakthrough show was at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea in 2006/7. I did a lot of work in the local community there. Swansea is a great place. I love the sea.
Do you have any exhibitions coming up?: Currently I am Artist-in-Residence at The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. In November/December 2008 I will have my end of year show at The Library. I also have a screening next month in a festival called VastForward in Holland.
Any thing else we should know?: I love working in all mediums of art. I don't like having a signature work. It narrows your vision. I love collaborating on art projects, anything where you learn more about and from other people is a bonus.
