Blaengar

'The living room' by Alice Briggs

Last updated: 09 October 2006

Blaengar is an arts group set up in the Aberystwyth area aimed at hosting events and exhibitions for contemporary artists in Mid Wales. Alice Briggs from Aberystwyth is a member of the group and in October 2006 she explained Blaengar's aspirations as it launched its first event - Interaction.

"Blaengar is a not for profit arts organisation set up by a small group of emerging artists outside of Aberystwyth with the aim to run events and exhibitions for contemporary inter-disciplinary artists in Mid Wales.

We aim to focus on creating site specific exhibitions within the landscape of the area. The organisation is led by a small group of emerging artists working in mixed media including myself, Alice Briggs, an artist and curator currently working as a Project Manager for Cywaith Cymru, and arts facilitator for HAUL Arts in Health Group for Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire NHS Trust.

Laura Harding, is a graduate from Newport College of Arts and is a member of the performance group 'White Rope'.

Alys Owen is an artist from Porthmadog working in textiles and is currently about to take up an artist's residency in Cyprus which will help to internationalise the work of Blaengar.

As well as running events for emerging artists we hope to create a network of artists working in interdisciplinary media within Mid Wales and encourage artists from the area who have moved away to work with us in the future.

The idea came about through Laura Harding and myself, who had returned home to Aberystwyth after studying arts away, and feeling a need to connect with the rest of the contemporary art world and a desire not to have be marginalised by the lack of exhibition facilities in rural Mid Wales for installation art.

The highlight of the project so far has been acquiring our first grant from the Arts Council of Wales which has enabled us to invite artists to work with us and create new work for our event Interaction in October 2006.

Interaction is Blaengar's first event and will show work inspired by the urban and built environment in this instance, the promenade of Aberystwyth. Artist have used the theme of Victoriana as inspiration. Some works speak for themselves, whilst others comment on social situations, or contemporary issues.

Blaengar hopes to continue to work with emerging artists and more established artists from Wales and take our events abroad, and really build a reputation for Aberystwyth as a place for exciting and innovative art projects.

By Alice Briggs from Aberystwyth.
