  • Examples of Andy's work...

  • What is your name?: Andy Hancock

  • Where do you work?: All over Mid Wales.

  • How did you get started as an artist?: I am self-taught and my first major work was at Lake Vyrnwy sculpture trail, which predates my work on the sculpture park. I was responsible for starting the sculpture park at Lake Vyrnwy, in conjunction with STW and the forestry commission. It was then called the sculpture trail. The orginal theme of the work was the biodiversity of the site and its importance to tourism and the local economy. The first sculpture was completed in 1996 and I was the artist in residence until 1999 I was funded by STW, Forest enterprise, the RSPB, the Arts Council of Wales via a local arts group - Arts Connection - and other local businesses. I worked alongside hundreds of school children and visitors explaining the work and its importance to the area. I continue to believe that interacting with the public is vital to completing your work. The Sculpture Park started as a collaboration between Tom Gilhespy and myself as part of the funding from the arts council called for an international collaboration. I was responsible for raising the intial funding as well as producing funds (in part) for the first booklet about the work and video of the event.

  • How would you describe your work?
Larger-than-life wood sculpture that uses organic forms to inspire work that is original not ordinary.

  • Do you draw inspiration from your local area?: Always - especially from the people .

  • Where has your work been shown?: Lake Vyrnwy, Powysland museum, aross the UK, Australia, NZ and America.

  • Do you have any exhibitions coming up?: Latest work (December 2005) is a water feature installed for the exhibition of "Man made water in Montgomeryshire" at Powysland Museum in Welshpool, Powys.

  • Any thing else we should know?: I work in wood, steel, sand and recycled industrial surplus.

We came across Andy's work whilst traveling. We stopped to take a closer look and were so impressed purchased one of his magnificent owls with an oulet peaking out of the end of a branch stub.It is a work of art that never fails to attract comment by visitors. His uncompromising view on life and art is refreshing and I think of the man every time I admire the owl.My grand daughter said to me tonight that the owl is always staring at her and wierd.Well that's 6 yr olds for you.

Went past Andy's outdoor "Gallery", meant to stop for a couple of minutes - one hour later..... Most impressed, especially with the goat and the heron in steel, but also the Marlin. had a wonderful time - I've taken a whole load of photos, which I intend to use in a book, if that's OK (See www.dafydd-manton.co.uk) Even my aged mother-in-law, who is nearly 90, grumpy and hard to please was enchanted!! Thanks
