While my son attended UWA I had the great chance to be in Aber twice, when he started his course and for the graduation. These were visits I'll never forget, beautiful and quite place to live in. I miss those few days I spent there and believe me, I travelled to many countries around the world... but Wales and specially Aberystwyth are no doubt the places I will always remember with "saudade".

Last May I visited Aber, my home town, for only about the third time after moving away in 1981. What has changed? Taxies everywhere (pre-1981 you couldn't find one if your life depended on it!). And, more importantly, some decent restaurants and the transformation of the old station. What hasn't changed? The Vale of Rheidol (everything ok Digger?), traffic problems and the Pier! The old characters are still there and long may it continue.

My 4 months in Aber were just fantastic - it is a beautiful, fun, welcoming place. The bakeries, butchers, and pubs are just wonderful. But, the people...the best of all things Aber. It is a great place to walk and think and relax.

I have been visiting Abba for the past 35 years plus, some times 3 times in the year, the thing i have noticed mostly over the years is the way the town especially the sea front and harbour area have been cleaned up,the local council have given the locals a town to be proud of, long may it remain in it's unmolested state for future generations to enjoy ,

Since Dad lives in Aber, I check the cameras quite a lot - just for reassurance that all's well in Aber! So I much appreciate the cameras. Interesting that, while the Promenade one is maybe the loveliest view, with that huge big sweep, the King's Hall one actually gives you a more accurate sense of what the weather is!Thanks, guys, for a much-loved service.

Tom from Worcestershire (unfortunately)If you want to show Aber life on a web cam it should be outside the railway station. It's the place to watch Aber life go by. Taxis, buses, shoppers, standing people, sitting people, holiday people and the traffic!

I miss aber so much! I don't think I would have ever found such lovely friends as I did there in any other university town. people always talk about it raining in wales but there was SO often a blue sky, even in winter. bbqs on the beach in summer; the most amazing sunsets; watching the starlings for hours; the list goes on. Take me out of loud london with the stressed people and back there to the open friendly faces, Maybe we should all retire there...if only for that big hill!

I love Aberystwyth, I am a fequent vistor from April to October. Aberystwyth is clean and very well looked after. There are just 2 faults that I can pick up on in Aberystwyth and the first being the quite recent new road and pavement on the street that leads from the Prom to the town, it is dreadful! the pavement and road are now on the same level and this is a nightmare for the visually impaired, and I have witnessed many a car driver mounting the so called pavement not realising that it is not part of the road and vice versa, pedestrians walk into the road not realising they have wondered of! f the pavement onto the road!!! The other negative point point is the zebra crossing by the Kings restraunt/hotel, every time my husband and I go to Aberystwyh we go to the Kings for Lunch and are usually lucky enough to have a window table. We sit there in amazement at the sight of drivers ignoring people who are actually on the crossing but carry on driving, this also includes BUS drivers! If ever there was a need for pedestrian lights it is here and I am amazed that no one has been killed here, I think if the council or the police sat in the window of the kings hotel on a busy Saturday afternoon to observe the crossing then they would realise how dangerous this crossing is.

My family moved from Aber in 1963 when I was still in my first year at Ardwyn. Dad was the local RSPCA inspector and got moved to Derby. I never stopped feeling that Aber was my home and started going back a few years later, hitch-hiking, spending Saturdays (and Fridays if I was lucky) in the Angel. I visit the webcams every week because Aber remains close to my heart. I see familiar names in the comments. I went to school with a Clues boy (Danny?), and I'm thinking Geraint Rees had a brother, Peter, my age. Lots of memories of summers on the beach, playing up the castle, the fair in November, and Saturday matinees. I visited two years ago, and there were no children in town, just students. Sad, really.

Having aunts and uncles in Aberystwyth now long gone also my mothers birth place i have fond memories of Aberystwyth especially the Christmas's spent with family a walk along the prom before dinner to kick the bar. Boxing day to the pier cinema anyone else remember hearing the sea under the pier as film was showing. Then home to bed and listening to the waves crashing on south prom. from Prospect st. Also French the onion seller and milk delivered by horse and cart with measured jugs, innocent days.

As a small child I remember Peacocks had wonderful wooden floors, Woolworth’s seemed huge and full of things to spend my pocket money on.(2s6d) Mr. Spud served the most delicious American Pancakes and the best milkshakes could be found at the Café in the Station. In my teens I went to Ardwyn, met dates outside the station, got outrageously drunk in the Angel and danced Saturday nights away at the Kings Hall disco. Went to St Michaels Church 3 times on Sundays!! (Choir & Sunday school). Ahh those were the days and I still have my best friend from the age of 4 (Pauline) This year I shall be 50…………… Fond memories and love to all who went to Alexandria Road Primary and Ardwyn.

Can't believe how many people have such fond memories, recognise quite a few names too. I'm planning on making a short film about the place and all the quirky stories here. Does anyone know if there's still a nudist b&b in Pentregat? Or who has the footage of all that money thrown about the street this yr? If you have any interesting aber tales please mail me as im doing the research now...

It was nice for a short time. Well, two years! There is not much life on the sea, not many boats that go out such as for fishing or just little cruises to Pembrokeshire for example. A good meeting place for young people which is not my style. I missed good bistro cafes that are open in the evenings. Boring exhibitions in the National Library. The Arts Centre is better and the other libraries in my view. Can recommend the Blue Creek Cafe - quality and price are right and you will meet the hard-working and kind owner Sion!

Being a Portuguese, I have plenty of country where to travel by (and believe it´s a great country). However, adding a beautiful seaside town like "Aber" to a great teaching facility such as the UWA, I am sure this was one of the most rewarding experience in my life. I will keep it that way and it will be no different when I return for a visit.

Further to the Rag week stunts, there was also a roadblock on Trefechan Bridge and a lorry went through and the rope got tangled underneath. The driver stopped at the bridge street chip shop and the lorry rolled backwards into "Graigwen" the house I was brought up in.

Remember when the Uni students, during a Rag Week in the 50's, carried an Austin Seven (in pieces)up on to the roof of the King's Hall and reassembled it up there! I bet the beer barrel roadblock isn't allowed at the bottom of Penglais Hill any more, either. Great fun and lots of fundraising. Still missing the place after 37 years 'downunder'.

Aberystwyth is fantastic and plenty of nice places to visit near by too, like Devils Bridge, and Borth.
If Aber had a man-made beach and a tidy 3,000 all-seated Football Stadium, the town would get more events and more visitors I'm sure. But great town all the same. Why not give it a try ?

In reply to Ann from Aber, I can only speak for myself but I look at the site because I am from Aberystwyth. Do I "miss something"? Certainly not the winters, or the road system or people who think that because one lives away now, they must give up the right of curiosity.

The Clues boys must miss something or why would they be looking at the site? Hoping for some drama perhaps, something still draws them back to my home town, and yes we did have bikers skinheads in the 70s. We had the farmers as the bikers pub on all bank holidays was swimming in beer but maybe the boys were busy surfing the tides.

As soon as you step off the train the wind blows you the smell of spices as you walk past the curry house. The wind sweeps past your nose again and drives you to the sea where the waves calmly wash over many pebbles beneath your feet. A shawdow casts overhead as Constitution hill stands proud towering over the sea. Aber's a magical place' tucked away and preserved. I will always hold fond memories of aber and its people.

I've been coming to Aber every year since I was 2 yrs old and I'm now in my 35th year! My relatives live in near by Penrhyncoch. To me it has not changed all that much. It is still a wonderful, vibrant town that still holds on to its charm. If anyone has anything negative to say about it then don't try to convince them overwise, we would rather these people didn't pollute the town anyway!

I partially disagree with Sharon Woodcock. Yes, Aber is a place you love to visit, but it is NOT a place you love to leave. It's always a sad time when the train pulls out of the station and heads back to England.
Sharon couldn't have experienced the warm people, the beautiful scenery or the fabulous sea. If she had, she would not make statements like she did.

Me and my family visit aber quite often as we spend a great deal of time at our caravan site in New Quay. It is especially great in the winter months when the sea is crashing onto the pier. Had many fun times running down a platform along the sea front trying to dodge the waves!

Aberystwyth is a fantastic and beautiful place. If I did not have a family back in TNT I would have stayed here and not ever gone back home. I hope to visit again someday with my husband and children. I hope that modernisation does not ever visit this town and take away its quaint beauty.

As I sit typing this, over my shoulder the Hauriki Plain on New Zealand's north island shimmers blue and gold in the distance.
Seeing this webcam, memories of a previous life in Devil's Bridge and Aber are palpable.
Living there through the 60s and the 70s was an ineffable dream... A dream I shall never forget.
Shame those days had to end. And a shame that what's there now is a shabby memory. The town was once GREAT!
Let's hope that one day it will be again...

I used to live in Aberystwyth and I think it is the best place in the world! I have lots of friends there. We visited in November 2004 and November 2005, and we hope to come back this year. Thank you for the webcams - we like to see Aber.

Aberystwyth is a magical place. Once you go there, you always have a desire to return. It's been over a year now that I've been in Aber, and I miss it dearly. The food, the people, the many hours sitting at the top of Constitutional Hill looking at the sea are just some of the wonderful memories I have.

I have seen Aber almost every year since leaving in 1992. The Terrace Road Cam is a pleasant reminder of daily trips to WH Smith, and the White Horse. I refuse to use the new name whatever that is.

I was in Aberystwyth (1979-1982) It was a fanatastic place and I have so many happy memories. I've never gone back, because I'm afraid that I'd be disappointed.

Just logged on and noticed my brother left a message from Papua New Guinea recently! Being born and raised in Aber, the town will always be a special place for me mainly because of the friends I have still living there - but seeing the webcam at this time of year makes me SO glad to be living in the warmth of the Gulf Coast of Florida! How about putting the cam in a 'busier' part of town; perhaps looking down Great Darkgate Street and North Parade? Just a thought.

I left aber about three months ago. I miss it and nice to be able to see it through webcam. However, it is a place that will dangerously contain you for ever and ever and ever. Escaping from it is highly difficult task once you are used to be in that place.

I have lost friends here in Botswana because I don't stop talking about Aber. But in losing friends at least I have gained back Aber through the webcam. Love it! It's a pity I don't know anyone that still lives in Aber now; I could ask them to stand right under the camera! Anyone wants to be friends out there?

If you want to show Aber life on a web cam it should be outside the railway station. It's the place to watch Aber life go by. Taxis, buses, shoppers, standing people, sitting people, holiday people and the traffic!

I really do like the cameras. I can check what the weather is like when family are up at borth.
How about seeing if you can get a camera at the uni overlooking aber itself, that would make for a great view.

Living in Birmingham now with my other half after we both graduated from Aber in 2003. We try to get back as often as possible for a weekend because small as it is Aber is the kind of place that gets under your skin once you have spent any length of time there. It feels just like coming home, nothing really changes...thats the way we like it!
Another Uni union...?

We have just moved in together but I have lived here for two years already Aber has always been like a second home to me and I have a lot of special memories here, and now I'm making more special memories with a very special guy, come and see Aberystwyth it has lots to offer, a great sea front friendly people and lots of great places to eat out, a great night out and a brilliant mix of cultures.

One night in Aber as the sea rolled in from the darkness and kissed the lonely beach, I sat looking out into the night. The chattering town stands behind me but here on the lonely seashore the chatter was transformed to a hush and the ancient waves called out to Constitution Hill and beyond. I snuggled up to my scarf and tucked my hands into my pockets...what a place!! Aber...where are you now?...The answer to that is simple...you are where you will always be..a backdrop to my past, but a past I can never return to. The shingles and the shells the front and the hotels, the people good and bad,the seasons..the smells...the bars and the colleges...all to me just a distant memory...listen hard...as I did that night a million years ago...and you will hear the ghost of eternity whistling out to sea.

Stayed up in Devil's Bridge end of August this year (2005) in a vw camper. Took the little steam train to aber for the day, what beautiful views. Then a lovley day in Aber - fish n chips, a stroll round the shops... what a lovely town in a beautiful country...beats Barry Island...

From everything I've seen and heard of Aber it's a wonderful place. I hope one day to get enough cash together to come visit.
And although your beautiful King's Hall is gone, be glad you don't live here where the oldest buildings are 25- 30 years old and developers have a mad passion for tearing down old buildings and paving over parks to replace them with eyesores.

I have to agree with Nicole Richards. Aber is the coolest place to be. I was down in July visiting friends and family and I can't wait to go back in October. I really miss the place. Thanks for the website.

The weather forecast and results do not give a true picture of Aberystwyth as the cam does, because the Weather station for Aberystwyth is at Aberpoth some 30 miles away, the weather can be so much different just 5 miles away, especially inland.

I am the other side of the planet from Aber (my home town) and if I am lucky and log on to the web cam before about 7pm local time (10 am local time during your summer [it's summer all year round here!]) then I can actually see something but it still is a bit non-eventful. My suggestion is for some "local people" to pull off a mass moon or streak or even a (mock!) fight to liven up the shots of nothingness.

Great thing I found the Aber cams on the web. Reminds me of the splendid time I had studying there in '96 - I was lucky to stay at the student residences 'round the corner (Ceredigion Hall and Aberglasney Hall). I have to go back from time to time - as June last year. 'Special persons' leave our lives but good memories remain.

I think I know what Dai means. Sometimes the image does not change for hours, even the lights burn bright allnight in Stars shop on the left.

Bikers Heaven. Bikes parked outside Ma's Caffe at the back of the Kings Hall circa 1964. All British Norton, BSA, Triumph. Pudding basin crash hats with goggles and white scarfs wrapped around like masks. NCNR = North Cardiganshire Night Riders! Studs and leather. Mods? Skins? Don't make me laugh! Never saw any of them!

The replacement building is awful - the metal "balconies" will rust and the sweep of the seafront buildings has been destroyed.
The King's Hall should have been adapted for new use. Its demolition was little more than an act of vandalism.

During the 70's & 80's I played in bands which played at the King's Hall. It was one of the biggest venues we played at, with proper dressing rooms and full lighting rig etc. Especially remember the Young Farmers' Dance & Beauty Contest in 1972(73?). What a night!

yes I remember it well,The Kings Hall with the Bands and later on the pop groups in the ballroom,
and down stairs in the basement the dodgem cars , surrounded by game and slot machines, there also was a resturant.
It was a sad day when they pulled it down,
it was an Aber landmark.

Had our holiday every year in Aber as kids, that was 25-35 years ago, and loved it.
