In reply to Anons request for information about Glengower Hotel Victoria Terrace I can confirm that originally this property was called Blaenllynant. I believe that in the late 1940s this property was occupied by A Doctor James and family. As a small boy I was very friendly with his children, but I have had no contact since. Out of interest, behind this property, on Queens Road, ther was also another property that had previously been a part of it. This other property was called Blaenllynant Lodge (it still is) and it consisted of a small house with a narror drive up to the rear where the was a large double garage with stable block and tack room behind that. As children we used to play here and have the occasional trip out on the horse and carts (that were housed in the garage). After many years living away from this area of Aberystwyth, I bought Blaenllynant Lodge and eventually converted it. However, before startng the conversion work I stripped out the old stable stalls etc and donated them to Ceredigion Museum where I believe the sometimes use them to stage Animal husbandry exibitions? I also retained the original, Chain opperated roller shutter doors that ,I believe had been in place when the property was first constructed around 1902. Having sold the little house to finance the conversion, I then turned the rest of the property in Office and living accomadation. I hope this information will be of interest.

Re-Aberystwyth WAG offices. The land and money would have been better spent on anew hospital for Mid Wales, replacing the aging and inaccesable Bronglais unit. Not building another building when Aberystwyth already has a surfit of empty offices.

Having seen queries about St Padarns Convent, you might be interested in an old invoice I have just found in a recently deceased aunt's bureau. Where is the bronze War Memorial which Professor Ruteli designed which used to stand in front of the chapel in Powell Street? It was a winged figure of a youth standing on a globe bearing names of the fallen in World War I.

I am a frequent visitor to Aberystwyth at weekends, visiting my son who has been settled in lovely Aberystwyth for a number of years. I have heard that the National Library will be closing on Saturdays and this has shocked me, as I am a regular visitor. Surely, this is a retrograde step in promoting the arts and culture of Wales?

Just curious of finding peoples thoughts and knowledge on a certain subject. This rather strange subject for this message board is the Aber Behave or Be Banned scheme. I am an Aber local and unfortunately I was placed on the behave or be banned scheme. The incident was quiet trivial although i'm slightly concerned about revealing it on here at this stage as a fear of being identified could lead to a longer ban or similar. I had never been chucked out of a pub, and i have no criminal record whatsoever or cautions, i do not take drugs and i am not a trouble maker. The incident that occured in the...was reported to the police but the police dropped the investigation after studying the cctv and reading witness accounts as it appeared i did nothing wrong. i have written time and time again to the B.O.B.B. commitee with no reply, it seems that there is no way of changing this ruling despite my innocence being proven. i find this very unfair... I wondered if anyone on here had any advice or knowledge of what to do, and if there is any route to take to try and get my name cleared?? a solicitor perhaps? maybe someone that is on the B.O.B.B. comittee might read this and offer some form of advice. Thank You.

The police in this town are useless.Myself and some friends were taking a walk yesterday evening sat 2nd august [2008] 7pmish when we witnessed the most horriffic act of animal cruelty which made me feel disgusted with the human race. Three drunk yobbos had taken it upon themselves to buy some chips from the chip shop and throw them in to the path of traffic so the seagulls would go after them and get run over i witnessed one being hit by a bus and dieying while these yobs were laughing their heads off and cheering .Where were the police. I tried to call them but after wasting £1.50 in the phonebox with no answer i gave up and went to look for a officer on the street i walked all round town and couldnt find any police cars or officers and now those yobs have got away with taking an innocent life.I feel dishartend with the police service we get these days and think its high time somthing is done about it.

I've not logged on to this site for a while but I thank all the people who responded to my query about the RAF plane crash in Moria in the 1970's. I noticed a chap called David Lucas who knew my father (Elwyn Marsh). Seemed strange to see that on the message board. If your reading this David he is fine. He lives just outside Ludlow, Shropshire. Does anyone remember seeing the Northern Lights in Aber - either at the end of the 40s or at the beginning of the fifties? I went to St Padarns as a boarder - one night the nun in charge of our dormitory woke us all up so that we could see these amazing coloured lights flashing and shimmering across the sky.

Celia Evans, nee Peace, wrote asking about St Padarns Convent - Aberystwyth. I woz there around 1949-1952-ish and I think there is some kind of old pupils group, but not of my generation. A colleague of mine was there as well, about 10 years after me. I think the boarding part went after a while, and a kindergarten remained. Its a pity that these comment boxes don't have a means of contacting people, perhaps the BBC will forward you my email address. Maybe we could get something going! I remember Sister Amelie, and Sister Joseph (particularly Sister Josephs immaculate blue lino that we werent allowed to walk on, and had to push forward with shoe shaped dusters under our feet!) and many others... and endless long long walks on a Sunday to occupy us! I also remember the Convent Guide Company, and the death of the King - and getting to school by STEAM TRAIN... good gracious me!

Aberystwyth police keep saying they have the boy racer issue in hand. Yet the speed freaks keep tearing around the streets of the town unchecked, and apart from the speeding fines that fatten up the local exchequer, the matter is far from being adequately dealt with. It's high time many of our side road had speed bumps installed to stop this sort of thing at grass roots.

In reply to Jane Wood of California, 'The Angel' survives, though the 'Back Bar' we frequented in the early 1970s has been refurbished. The mural on the wall opposite the door has gone too. I know it had a round-head soldier on it but the rest has gone a bit hazy due to fading memory. In my day this bar was the haunt of good-natured hippies, while 'The Farmers' next door was favoured by bikers in leathers but without bikes who came in by bus from Machynlleth. Thankfully, the staff in 'The Angel' overlooked the err... um... rather young age of certain customers and in this way I met my wife to be there, age 16, who is watching TV as I type this. The beer was the awful Albright, drunk with a 'lemon top' to make it acceptable (12p per pint) and Worthington E, just as foul (at 13p). It might be difficult for you to place me as I wore the uniform: tie-dye pink (!) vest, flares with orange gussets sewn-in! cherry red platform shoes and '1960s' deep leather belt with money pouch... and waist length hair. Just like all the regulars of those times. The routine was get a bit oiled first then down to the Kings Hall for the 'Spot On Disco', or a band like 'Man','Iceberg' or 'Jonathan Kelley' if you were lucky.

There are ballroom and Latin American dance lessons on Thursday nights at 7.30pm in Penweddig school (term-time only). They are for beginners and attract all ages. I think the teacher - who is a rare treat in that she is actually qualified to teach dance lessons - also does a range of other lessons, private and for more experienced dancers too.

I have just read in another web site that there are now only 50 pubs in Aber and from another source they have all been destroyed. I moved away in the 80's Please don't say it's so. I'm in California and all my friends here want me to take them on a pub crawl. It also seems we all drank at the Angel, Farmers and the White Horse? We must all know each other. Is there a source we can contact each other?

I've lived in Aberystwyth for 3 years now and living in the town is near intolerable. I have a 5 month old son and he is woken up nightly by the reving of engines coming around Baker Street as the ignorant drivers rev at high speeds. The problem would be solved by a police presence which at these times of the night is nill. This must be sorted out.

Aberystwyth flies all flags on the front, Wales, Scotland, England, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey and countries from all over the world. Where is the National flag of Northern Ireland. On spending a holiday there I felt very hurt not to see my National flag flying. It is in my eyes an insult to the people of Northern Ireland and on returning home have discussed my findings,to lots of people in our provence and there has been a lot of hurt expressed. Is Ulster not an ethnic minority as the excuse from your local council gives for the flying of flags?

In my year of office '06-'07 I have decided to form a constituted committee to fundraise for certain organisations in Aberystwyth. The only criteria I used was that the committee members will all come from groups that will benefit from the FUNDrive, so they will all help each other to gain as much funds in my year of office. The members of the committee are the Family Centre, Penparcau, the Penparcau Scouts, the pensioners dinner club Penparcau, Llwyn-yr -Eos assessment unit, Family support team, Aberystwyth gymnastics club. If anyone out there can help with funding or sing, dance, play a musical instrument, get in touch with the Town Council at the Town Hall Aberystwyth.

I would love to go back to Aberystwth one day with my husband. I was there for my short summer course study session on librarianship (Govt. expenses) - 3 weeks in June 1997 at the University of Wales. I love the University, the peaceful and quiet town. Was surprised that most of the veteran folks there knew and had lived in Malaya (now Malaysia) as British soldiers. Some folks can still speak Malay. Community there are friendly and cheerful people and I love the town, the sea and even the houses with small flower garden patches. I still have the receipts from things bought there as momentos... exchange rate at that time was MYR 1.00 (Ringgit) for UK £4.00.

'Twas ever thus Richard from Aberystwyth, as a child I was well aware of the lack of "things to do" and obviously the tradition continues. We looked forward to the marble season, the conker season, racing round the castle, fishing, swimming, playing in the woods and on the "bank", climbing Constie (from the sea side) etc etc. In a similar vein in answer to Dave J of Aberystwyth, the "old church-like building" was, would you believe, a church. It was St Paul's Welsh Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, designed by Walter P. Thomas of Liverpool and completed 1880. Later in the 20th century it fell into disrepair and for some time became yet another pub no doubt not suitable as a family venue.

My Uncle, Ken Hankey, worked on the Cambrian News for over 30 years until his untimely death in 1994. Although a very much laid back, easy going character I'm sure he would have something to say about this historic change. And not necessarily in support. However, change is never very far away in these modern days and I for one will continue to keep abreast of news in and around Aber albeit via the internet!

In reply to Jane (in search of pictures of her grandfather)... try 'Stories Of Old Railway Characters in Mid Wales' by G H Davies, published locally in Aberystwyth. I would expect that the town library would have a copy. This only has a few pictures, but a good handful of yarns mentioning many drivers by name. For pictures as well as stories, try 'Cambrian Companioship' by T P Dalton from Oxford Publishing Company; also 'Cambrian Lines' by Rex Christiansen published by Ian Allan. If you can't spot your grandfather, at least you will get a good impression of the locomotives he drove and the good-natured culture typical of engine crew. One thing is for sure; Jane's grandad would have known my wife's grandfather who was a driver based at Aber shed during the same period (Llew Jones). We still treasure his cap-badge which he is seen wearing on P 7 of Daltons' book). Just one more source. The best accounts of life on steam locomotives are written by former drivers and firemen, rather than by academics or enthusiasts. That's what is good about the little book by G H Davies. But the best of the best is called 'Behind the Steam' by B. Morgan. While this particular book was written by a GWR driver from Pembrokeshire (who never drove on the Cambrian system) it is very evocative indeed. I mean, it probably gives the most graphic representation possible of the kind of working experiences your grandfather might have had. It is back in print after many years, priced about £14-£15 quid. Good luck!
    Wed Dec 14 19:53:49 2005

    Geraint Roberts ex Aber
To answer Jane's query. There are many books of GWR trains that feature Aberystwyth and the Cambrian coast. Most go under the heading of Cambrian Railways, being the forerunner of the GWR in this area. But there are none that are specifically of GWR trains and their drivers. However, an old engine driver called John A Davies, published his memoirs called 'Boyhood ambition - How I became a train driver.' He struggled for 10 years to get a job at Aber shed throughout the 40s and early 50s. This may include pictures and references to your grandfather, although it may also be too late. Good luck in your search.

Were my wife and I the last newly married couple to leave Aber by train to the sound of a continuous blast on the locomotive horn? This custom went back to steam days when long whistles told everyone in town that a couple was off on honeymoon. They whistled as far as Commins Coch, and in our case as far as the site of Bow Street Station. (This is a very long time as it took ages for the engine just to climb Fronfraith Bank. Total bedlam all the way. My thanks to the driver that day (20.9.75)... a giant of a man, I remember. Wooo..Woooo!

I have just had a reply from Malcolm Pryce himself (See Angela's original query below). Here is his reply.

"Hi Angela. Yeah, Canticle Street. Sorry you couldn’t find it – there are a number of errors & inaccuracies in the real Aberystwyth. I’ve written to the mayor but it’s no use. I’d stick to the books if I were you. :)

I’m hoping to deliver the manuscript of number four after Christmas which should mean it appearing sometime in 2007. Sorry about the wait, but you shouldn’t read them so fast. Take care & thanks, Malcolm"

In response to Mike from Cornwalls' comments ABSOLUTELY NOT, Do not let the comments worry you. Aberystwyth is no worse than any other town in terms of violence. Of course there is going to be a bit of bother wherever you are, but if you keep your head down, and just get on with your own thing there is absolutely nothing to worry about. The trouble usually starts when people have been turfed out of the pubs/clubs and then hang around. Usually the fights are between people who already have issues, it is still relatively uncommon for an innocent passer by to get caught up in anything. Go to Aberystwyth, take your friends and family it still is a fantastic place to live/visit/be. I would go back tomorrow if my family didn't come first. Enjoy your visit and don't be put off.

re Angela from Chepstow's question on Canticel Street: The third Malcolm Pryce book offers clues as to the location of Louie Knight's office in Canticle Street; is it in fact Corporation Street, (going by the directions he gives in the third book)? As for his new office, is there a 22/1B in Stryd-y-Popty (Baker Street for non-Welsh speakers)- I looked but couldn't find it...

However one thing is bugging me.
