House Detective

Preswylfa Toni Barker was a student in Aber from 1993 to 1998. After leaving, she decided to do a little detective work to find a house in the town where her grandmother stayed as a child.

Written by Toni Barker from London:

"I was a student in Aber from 1993 to 1998, spending five very enjoyable years there. My grandmother once enjoyed time in Aber too - she used to go on holiday there every summer as a girl, travelling with her brother from Dudley in the Black Country. They used to stay with friends, one of whom was called "Griff", and she told me how they used to enjoy climbing Consti and going to watch the sheep being brought in up on the hills.

After gran died a couple of years ago, I found some photos of her and her brother and their friends, larking about in Aber in the summer of 1931. It was so nice to see my gran having fun up by the Castle, just as I used to do some 65 years later.

One of the photos showed my Great Uncle Les and his friend Griff outside the front door of a house. Part of the house name was visible - "PRESWYL***". I wondered where in Aber this could be, as it was obviously Griff's own house. I sent a message to the Aber Community at Livejournal - a blogging website - and offered fifteen pounds to any student who could find the house for me, and take a photo of it.

I knew there was a "Preswylfa" on Trinity Road, and hoped that this was the same house, as I myself had lived a couple of doors away when I lived on Trinity Road in 1996. Sadly, this turned out to be a red herring.

Then someone else found another Preswylfa, this time on Penglais Terrace, at the bottom of the hill. He very cleverly superimposed the original photo which I had sent over a photo of the house today, which shows beyond doubt that this is the right one!

I'm looking forward to visiting Aber again soon, so I can take a good look at the house myself, after having had years of walking past it every day as a student and never knowing it was where gran stayed.

I would love to find out more about "Griff" but I guess I'll have to wait for the 1931 census to come out before I can look up who was living there at the time....ah well! I may write to the current residents of Preswylfa to see if they know anything, but I doubt they would."

I was a student and lived in no. 7 (2 doors down) 1990-94. The chap in no. 9 was a teacher - nice chap. Neither us got on with the grumpy old bloke who lived in no. 8 though!
