Student Life

Penglais Campus, University of Wales Aberystwyth Every year, thousands of students from all over the world pass through the doors of University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Rhys Dart from Cardiff was one of them.

Rhys came to study in the town as an 18-year-old fresher back in 1997 - and stayed for 6 years, picking up a degree in International Politics, a Masters in International History and serving a year as President of the Guild of Students. Here are his thoughts on life in the college by the sea.

Why did you choose to study in Aber?
"To be honest it wasn't my first choice initially but I found out that the University set scholarship exams and passing those allowed an easier passage into University - you might say that I went for the easier option! I duly passed the exams and was made an unconditional offer for my troubles, so the A-Level exams became stress free!"

What's accommodation like in Aber?
"Accommodation in Aber is generally good, the university's accommodation is varied in size and quality but they are working on modernising the older facilities. There is plenty of choice in the private sector as well, although houses down-town are fast becoming a more sought-after commodity as student numbers rise. Prices tend to range between £30 and £65 per week, but you have to be careful because you tend to get what you pay for!"

What's the nightlife like?
"The nightlife is excellent! What Aber lacks in number of nightclubs, it makes up for in atmosphere. All of the clubs in town try to vary their nights and so there is choice, and with 52(ish) pubs in close proximity to each other, youre never far away from your next drink!

What's the best thing about being a student in Aber?
The best thing about being a student in Aber is that no-one ever leaves! It's true that we're miles away from anywhere else but this is a really positive thing because it means that everyone stays in Aber at the weekends which makes for a fun and vibrant atmosphere. The fact that the University is so much part of the town is great as well, as the town itself is very student-focussed and friendly"

What's the worst thing about being a student in Aber?

"The journeys home have to be the worst thing about being a student in Aber. Unless you happen to come from Penparcau or Goginan, you're going to find visiting home a pain. Trains are regular but often full or late because of flooding, and the roads are narrow and you are bound to get stuck behind a caravan 20 minutes into your three-hour journey, its a nightmare!"

Would you choose Aber again?
"Absolutely! I have spent six very happy years here, the Aberystwyth student experience is an excellent one!"
