Freshers' Week 2005

Bec Corn, President of Aberystwyth Students Guild

Last updated: 12 May 2006

After graduating in July 2005, Bec Corn was elected President of Aberystwyth Students' Union. This was her welcome message to new students arriving at the college by the sea in September 2005.

By Bec Corn, President of Aber's Guild of Students:

"Hey there, welcome to Aber! My name's Bec and I am President of Aberystwyth Guild of Students (the Students' Union).

Aberystwyth is a wonderful place to come to university, and really is a great place to study - it's warm and friendly, and has a great community atmosphere, as well as some of the best academic support in the country. To have the National Library so close to the university - and at the same time be on the beautiful Welsh coastline, with great beaches and easy access to farmland - is wonderful.

I moved here from London three years ago to study International Relations, and have loved every moment of being here. I have really enjoyed my studies in the International Politics department, and also taken courses in Human Geography and Law, and worked on projects with people from all sorts of different subjects. I have made some great friends, studied under some amazing academics and had some of the best experiences of my life here.

The great thing about Aber is that you really can get to know everyone - you'll even bump into your lecturers on the beach or in the pubs and cafes in town!

During my three years I have been involved with sporting clubs like women's football and surfing, and was vice president of the Expeditions Society in my second year; and societies such as the debating society, the chess club and AberAmnesty, which I was president of for just over a year.

I also play sax in a local band and have played violin with the university orchestra, and have been learning Welsh, French and Spanish.

When you're in Aber, the Guild is here to back you up every step of the way. We call our Students' Union a 'Guild', by the way, because it's made up of a few different unions (UMCA, the Welsh Students Union; MSU the Mature Students Union; the Athletic Union, and so on).

We provide a comprehensive welfare service for when things get tough, campaign on the issues you care about and defend you when you need us to, offer training and development support for your future, run the student media and provide excellent sporting facilities with enough variety to ensure you'll always find something to do that engages your interest. And on top of that we provide a top notch entertainments calendar to service your social life too!

Come and visit us, look at the facilities and talk to current students - I'm sure you'll love it here. If you want to be part of a community that embraces diversity and welcomes you into its heart then you'll find Aberystwyth to be the perfect choice. Good luck, take care, and have fun."

Calling Rebecca Corn.... What are you up to now honey?? Haven't seen you for ages! Looks like you're doing a fantastic job there, guess you're swamped! Give me a call some time, still in the same place, missing Aber.

What a great place to be ...One word spring to mind is AUTHENTIC. Come on, where in the UK will you have policy in the student union such as Boycott Nestle and this Matt Hale (one of the sabb) quoting Sartre. The whole place with it's Pier attractions make feel that time have been suspended. The price for instance, you can get the best carrot cake in the world for 60p. In London in your local Starbucks, it's 2.50. Yes definitely, AUTHENTIC - forget OXBRIDGE, this is the place...Vintage stuff.
