Jackie 'The Monster' Jenkins

Photograph of Jackie Jenkins taken by Gwyn Martin Fisherman Jackie Jenkins was one of Aberystwyth's old characters - 'a man of extreme strength and full of fun'. Charlie Downes remembers him well.

"When I first knew Jackie, he was bowman on the lifeboat. He walked with a severe limp and always claimed he could not swim, yet whatever the weather, you could depend on Jackie being one of the first to appear when the maroons were fired (usually from "Ma's Café" at the side entrance of Peacocks).

He was a man of extreme strength and full of fun. There are many stories about how Jackie would put a rope in his mouth and tow things just using his teeth.

He was reputed to have pulled boats up the beach, and for a Sixpence bet he was reputed to have pulled a Double Decker bus for some distance down the promenade.

He was known as "The Monster" and was said to be a "Hard Man". However, I also know that he was a man of integrity for one night during the winter of 1960 (I was just 18), he approached me in the Pier Hotel and borrowed Ten Shillings (a fair amount in those days).

I never believed that I would have the money returned as Jackie had been slightly drunk when I lent it to him so I believed that he would not even remember borrowing it. When the Spring arrived and Jackie started catching lobsters again, the first thing he did was to repay his debt to me.

I am sure that there are a lot of people around with memories of these times. Let's hope that they will also share them as the characters should not be forgotten. In fact, in the days before we all became glued to the telly they were often part of our entertainment."

I often fished on the Clarice, with Jack Phillips and Will. She was lost in a summer gale, Jack was rescued by the Aber lifeboat. Will had his own boat by then, he saved her by running her shore. I was on a cargo boat in the Irish Sea in the same gale.

I knew all the fishermen mentioned. I was born in Trefechan, often fished with Baden Davis in a variety of boats. I walked miles with Jackie Jenkins down Tan y Bwlch in the winter. I also had crushes on both his daughters as a teenager (Heather and June). Gwilym and Dai Williams were characters I often went fishing with as a boy. I spent many happy hours in Baden's shed on the quay in winter, listening to the stories of the fishermen. I went to the Outward Bound Sea School in 1954, then joined the Blue Funnel Line, often called the Welsh navy because of the amount of Welshmen sailing on their ships. I spent ten years on British ships, then came to New Zealand sailing on NZ ships. I was the National Secretary of the NZ Seamen's Union. Since then I have written 4 books. My latest "Shipping Out" is about growing up in Aber and fishing, and the years I spent tramping the world on ships. My son Gwilym visited Aber recently, and fell in love with it, he can't understand why I ever left!

I remember Jack "The Monster" Jenkins very well. I also know his children, esp Graham "Roachie" Jenkins. When Roachie was about 12 or so, he had a "confrontation" with my late eldest brother David. My Father was outraged by this, he chased Roachie, and gave him a earful, so to speak. The next day, my Father was walking along Heol Ystrad, where we lived, and saw Jack The Monster approaching him. Fearing the worst, my father thought he was either in for a hiding, or a triad of verbal abuse. To his amazement, Jack thanked my Father, and said. 'That was the best thing you did to my boy Mr Griffiths, I've been trying for years to "keep him in line". This story is true, and later, Roachie, along with my brothers David and Anthony, and the Samson brothers of Borth, formed The Shadaracks. They had a very raw R&B sound, and went on to become second in the Welsh National Union Of Musicians contest in Cardiff. Jack was a very colourful character, just like his Son Roachie still is. They have both enriched my life. Mike Griffiths.

Yes I remember Jakie Jenkins back in the mid 50's. For a time he worked in the sewerage plant and I will never forget seeing him one day during his shift pulling one of his own teeth out by inserting a nail file into the hole in the tooth and levering back and forth until the offending problem was removed. A remarkable man.
