Aber Author

Pen Dinas

Last updated: 17 November 2006

Aberystwyth features in a novel by a local author which was published in October 2006. In 'Parang', Gareth Ellis writes about three former soldiers holding a secret meeting. You can read an extract below.

Extract from 'Parang' by Gareth Ellis:

"They stood up and looked at the monument rearing starkly upwards on the top of Pen Dinas. Griffiths folded the newspaper shielding the notes.

'Wellington's monument. It's supposed to be a cannon with the mouth pointed to the heaven's an end to all wars.'

Hughes was smiling.'I'll drink to that.'

They turned around casually and observed who else was nearby. The two fishermen were also bikers, sporting black leathers and impressive bikes. One was casting, the other appeared to be selecting a rod from the contents of a black box. The rod was telescopic and it had a large reel. He apparently rejected it and placed it upright in the shingle. Griffiths noted that the reel was pointed directly at them.

I have bought any literature from Aberystwyth that I can find. Even so, I bought this one 'Grits' by Niall Griffiths and it was extremely hard to read. He wrote all the dialogue in English, but with slang and Welsh accent. It was mostly about doing hard drugs (groan), but almost all of it takes place around Aberystwyth. So I will look into your suggestions...

My book entitled 'Aber Prom' has just been published. It details the entertainment and events on Aberystwyth promenade. It's full of photographs and historical text.

I remember seeing the Aberystwyth-set A Mind to Kill (1991) at the Arts Centre when I was a student. One of the drama students from the seafront Hall I lived in could be glimpsed in a phone box at one point - something that really impressed me at the time...and then of course there's the Malcolm Pryce books Aberyswyth Mon Amour, Last Tango in Aberystwyth and The Unbearable Lightness of Being in Aberystwyth (and due in April in hardback, Don't Cry for Me Aberystwyth).
