Seimon Pugh-Jones

Last updated: 20 October 2008

Professional photographer and cameraman Seimon Pugh-Jones staged his first photographic exhibition at Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth during the autumn of 2008. Seimon had spent the previous four years working as a photojournalist specialising in the re-creation of battle scenes for an American magazine called Armchair General, published by Eric Weider, owner and director of America's biggest history publishing company. In October 2008, Seimon told us more about his work:

  • Seimon's work on exhibition ...

  • " I was originally trained in photography at Carmarthen College of Art and on to be a cameraman for Cwmni Hon in Aberystwyth. I then worked for a period at the National Screen and Sound Archive before branching out as a photojournalist.

I worked as a cameraman for a variety of television programmes as well as in mainstream cinema. I have been involved in over twenty different documentaries for the History Channel as well as the BBC's Bafta nominated drama D-Day 6:6:44 and on a programme featuring the late Sir Kyffin Williams. My most memorable experiences were shooting scenes for the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks production of Band of Brothers.

I shoot on twenty year old medium format cameras and hardly ever uses Photoshop.

Although I have worked on images of conflict my own stance is very anti-war.

I have a love-hate relationship with this subject. There is no doubt that images of war are incredibly moving and can really hit you hard, look at photographs taken by Robert Capa, Lee Miller and George Stephens, for example, these photographers took some of the most powerful and striking pictures of all time.

Having spoken with many veterans, their personal accounts can be quite disturbing. I think almost all old soldiers are anti-war!

As a photographer for Armchair General magazine my foremost objective was to be sincere with my interpretation of war.

I wanted to capture the heightened emotion and drama of battle as realistically as possible, not a sanitised Hollywood version.

I often found the creation of some of my images very disturbing and emotional, but if I'm to tell a story about war, the reconstructions and images have to be painful and honest too.

Each image has a specific storyline connected with it and to me that is very important when choosing to create a scene.

I'd often work with scripts and would take a great deal of care to get the image set up and correct to the smallest of detail. Sometimes it would take days to get everything right and, of course, with outside shots you'd have to have the right weather too.

If not, we would recreate it! Amazingly, many locations in and around Aberystwyth have doubled up as the Russian flats, Normandy Beaches and the deserts of North Africa.

I have also been looking into the possibility of setting up a permanent base for my own collection of Second World War memorabilia.

I would love to have a permanent base in South Wales for my collection and share my enthusiasm with visitors.

Besides British people there are so many Americans who come to Wales looking for information about their relatives who came here during the War period.

I feel that this is a lost opportunity if there are no permanent displays in our national and regional museums relating to the war period.

The exhibition of photographs will also house a recent image taken I took to commemorate those who fought in the Great War. I set up a photoshoot in Ipswich recently where I was able to use trenches for the setting of this moving and poignant shot.

It is being shown for the first time at Ceredigion Museum and will be hung just before the official 90th Anniversary of the end of World War One on 11 November 2008.

My contract with Armchair General Magazine came to an end in July 2007. Since then I have has moved back to the Carmarthen area and I have recently teamed up with Yvonne Hellin Hobbs and launched a Historical Photographic company.

I had the pleasure of working with Seimon for a few years some time ago and I was always amazed by his total dedication to his photography. His work standard is exceptional and although we no longer work together, I continue to follow his progress on the internet. I have had the pleasure of being one of Seimons models, although pleasure is possibly not quite the right word as he had me submerged in a Welsh river in October most of the day.Seimon is increadibly professional and really knows how to get the best out of his models. Fantastic results and a great bloke to work with.

Seimon combines technical skill with a deep knowledge and understanding of the period. I doubt that there are many photographers out there who can capture such evocative images of a difficult and contoversial subject as he can. I am currently researching the Resistance movement in the Poitou-Charente, who knows we might be working together again one of these days.

Brilliant work. As a professional artist, I really on well researched photography like this as a resource.Seimon's work stands out not only for his incredible technical ability, attention to detail, but his ability to capture human emotion. His work reminds me of the incredible photojournalist Tim Page. I can't wait to see more of his Seimon's work.
