Cover up

Last updated: 30 January 2009

'Cover up': an exhibition of aprons, overalls, pinafores and smocks is at Ceredigion Museum until 26 February 2009. Mary Turner-Lewis, collection care assistant at the museum, sent us these photos and captions on what our ancestors wore to protect their clothes:

Mary:"'Cover up' is an exhibition that takes a fresh look at the extensive range of men's, women's and children's protective garments such as aprons, overalls, pinafores and smocks. These were used to cover and shield the wearer's clothes whist carrying out a variety of tasks and activities. Some later garments became associated with a particular profession, an occupational dress or a uniform, whilst others, such as the woman's apron, mirrored the changing fashions and life style of the wearer. We have some lovely examples on show."
