Abercraf lies in the extreme south of the county of Powys, three miles from the town of Ystradgynlais. The Brecon Beacons National Park boundary begins to the north-west of the village. The village has a Miners' Welfare Hall, a testament to the village's coal mining past. The village is on the slopes of the mountain Cribarth, famous for its 'Sleeping Giant' appearance.
