Pretty Pictures

With its fishing boat-bobbing harbour and its eye-catching Georgian houses, Aberaeron offers no end of photo opportunities. Nigel Bird from Tregaron sent us a selection of his shots taken in and around the town.

Hi to Elizbeth Hodgson from Cornwall. This is a long shot but I'm trying to see if I can get in touch with a Ken Bowbanks who was in the British Army with my dad, Ken Farmer. Did a serch on Google and this is the only decent link that's come up. Don't know if the person you're referring to is the same one but it's worth a try. My dad's now 82 years old and often talks of his old mates in the army. Appreciate if you could get in touch if you reckon it might be the same person. Thanks a lot.

Elizabeth Hodgson from Cornwall.
I spent my 9th birthday at The Feathers Hotel in Aberaeron. That was back in 1955 and my mother had taken me there on holiday with some friends of hers,Rae & Ken Bowbanks and their daughter, who was my 'best friend',Adele.Rae had been born at Lampeter but had moved to Nottingham on her marriage to Ken...she has a sister who lived at Aberaeron.I loved the place and still remember having fresh salmon for the very first time while staying at The Feathers....I believe it had been caught in the river that ran almost next to the hotel.I also remember a lovely young boy who bought me a birthday card(he knew my friend Adele),his name was Anthony Holder and he had a friend named (please excuse the spelling) Gwynfor Davies.Such happy memories and such a beautiful place.Unfortunately I have never been back to Aberaeron but will never forget it.

Aberaeron was the birthplace of my grandparents and where I spent many happy holidays as a child and many more since. Nigel's first picture of south beach brings back memories of the days when, as a child, during bank holidays, I would be alone on the beach throwing stones at tin cans. How times have changed and also the popularity of this beautiful town. I am now in my 70's and still Aberaeron takes up the biggest part in my heart.

Most evocative. Now I'm all homesick. That's another £5.10 I'll have to fork out on the Severn Bridge tolls.
