Robert Weale

Robert Weale (right) Commonwealth bowls champion and World Indoor Singles Bowls Champion in 2000. He reached the World Indoor Bowls Final for the second time on 25 January 2009 only to lose out 11-6, 10-10 to Billy Jackson of England.

Biography:

First played bowls at age 11 at Presteigne Bowls Club. Introduced to game by friend of fathers, Eddie Gummer, who wanted new players to prevent club from folding.

First played bowls on the same evening as father. Won first open tournament at the age of 14, the Rhayader Open Singles, beating father in the final.

Has represented club and county since the age of 14. Has only played for Presteigne outdoors. Entered first Welsh national competition (Under 35 years singles) at the age of 14, reached final of tournament losing 21-11 to Roger Davies, St.Gabriels BC.

Won first Welsh outdoor cap in Ayr 1982, aged 19, and has represented Wales ever since, becoming the highest Welsh capped player in History in 2004.

Currently on 86 caps. Captained Welsh team on 4 occasions. Won first Welsh national title in 1984, winnning the junior singles (Under 25 years) and the Open Fours (with Father Bill and two Brothers David and Brian).

Has now won 24 Welsh national outdoor titles - Open Fours 6 times (5 occasions with 3 brothers, David, Brian and Stuart). Open Pairs 5 times (once with Uncle, John Weale and 4 Occasions with brother David).

First British Isles outdoor title 1985, Under 25years singles. Has competed in 6 World outdoor championships, 6 Commonwealth Games.

Fours Gold medallist 1986 Commonwealth Games(Edinburgh).
Fours Gold Medallist 2000 World Bowls (Johanessburg).
Started playing indoor bowls for Wales 1993.
Won first welsh national indoor open singles title 1997.
Probably biggest success indoor was winning the World Indoor Singles Title 2000. He reached the final again in 2009 only to lose out to England's Billy Jackson in the final.
