Dafydd Jones

Dafydd Jones during his debut International against Fiji Welsh rugby international and Llanelli Scarlets player.

Born:
24 JUN 1979
Place of Birth:
Aberystwyth
School:
Aberaeron High School
Trivia:
His favourite movie is Gladiator
Biography:
Dafydd Jones was born in Aberystwyth and grew up in the village of Llanarth, just south of Aberaeron. He attended the local village school before going to Aberaeron Secondary School. It was here he honed his skills on the rugby pitch. He played for Aberaeron before joining Llandovery RFC. At the turn of the century he moved to one of Wales' top teams, Llanelli.

He is a big man with lots of speed, and made his first team debut for Llanelli against Leicester in August 1999. Like many players, playing for Wales was an ambition and something he always wanted to do. That ambition was realised during November 2002 when he became the 165th Scarlet to wear the Welsh jersey. He produced an outstanding performance on his international debut for Wales - a game against Fiji in the BT Autumn International Series at the Millennium Stadium. This performance was described by some as the best debut since fellow flanker Brett Sinkinson won his first cap against France in 1999.

He built on this impressive debut with a good, solid 2003 Six Nations campaign. However, the end of the season finished on a low point when he was sent off for stamping against Perpignan in the Heineken Cup and banned for six weeks.

Dafydd made his World Cup debut 2003 against Canada, and touched down for his first international try against Italy during the same competition - a try which sealed a win for the team. He has said that he has learned so much from his fellow Llanelli Scarlets back rower, Scott Quinell, and hopes that he can go on to emulate what he has achieved.

He represented his country in the 2004 Six Nations championship and was in the Welsh squad again for the 2005 season. He played the first 60 minutes of the opening game against England on 5 February but had to withdraw from the rest of the championship because of a pelvic injury.

He made a full recovery by November 2005 when he was named in the Wales squad for the autumn internationals against New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa and Australia.

Good luck in your comeback and I look forward to seeing you wear the red jersey of Wales once again. It is great for me to see a boy from Sir Aberteifi playing for Wales. Being away from Wales and Y Cei makes me shout even louder for these places. Good luck

It goes to prove what I have always said. You can live for 25 years in a county and still find things out that you didn't know!
