Carl Griffiths

Carl Griffiths (right) A succesful striker and former Manchester City player

Born:
16 JUL 1971
Place of Birth:
Welshpool
Biography:
Born in Welshpool, Carl Griffiths' football career kicked off just across the border in Shrewsbury where he was taken on as a trainee in September 1988.

He made his mark shortly after arriving at Gay Meadow when he hit the back of the net four times in seven days. The first two goals came against Leeds at Elland Road, quickly followed by another two against Manchester City.

Those goals scored against Man City did not go unnoticed and the management at Maine Road must have kept an eye on the Welsh youngster's progress. In October 1993, Carl joined the Citizens for £500,000.

It seems that Carl always had an eye for goal and because of his ability to score he became a crowd favourite at Maine Road. At one stage, the sporting press tipped him to become the first £1million teenager.

His goal scoring ability also gave him a chance to play for the Wales Youth and Wales Under 21 teams.

His goal-scoring successes, however, seemed to be running out of steam. For the next couple of seasons, he was only on the fringes of first team set-up and after the arrival of strikers Paul Walsh and Rösler, he found himself playing in the reserves. He only had 15 games and 4 goals for Machester City.

At the start of the 1995-96 season, he left City for Portsmouth where he scored a couple of goals after coming from the subs bench. He joined Peterbrough seven months later for £225,000, but was then loaned out to Leyton Orient in October 1996.

After scoring three goals in five games during his loan spell, Orient took the plunge and bought him for £100,000 in March 1997.

Two and a half year later - on transfer deadline day 1999 - he joined Port Vale for £100,000, but returned to Orient just nine months later. In 2001 he was snapped up by Luton for £65,000 but despite managing seven goals in 10 starts, he was plagued by injuries.

At the start of the 2003-04 season, he joined First Division club Harlow Town before leaving to join Braintree both as a player and assistant boss of the Ryman League Premier Division club.

Met him in the Andrews Chippy in Welshpool. He signed my chip wrapper, whilst a Man City player. Perhaps that's why he didn't get too many games for City - Too much scoffing! Great player for the Shrews though!
