Biography:

Rhydian Roberts from Sennybridge made his name as a contestant on the 2007 series of X Factor. He finished as runner-up to Leon Jackson, being pipped into second place by just 1 % of the vote despite being the 3/1 on favourite with the bookmakers before the final.

"Rhydian was born in Brecon Hospital attended the Pontsenni Cylch Meithrin and then went onto Ysgol y Bannau welsh medium school in Brecon.

To this day he remains a fluent Welsh speaker.

He represented the school and Powys in the Urdd eisteddfod from the age of 5. He has kept his links with the Urdd whilst at Llandovery College and on through his University life at Birmingham Conservatoire.

This year was his last year as he will be 25 next year and too old.

He was a very keen rugby player, playing with Gwernyfed club, near Brecon, as a junior and later for his school.

He is still very keen on fitness and goes to the gym daily.

He also took up the trumpet and cornet which he played right through to his A Level music exam.

He often says that his time at Llandovery College was one of the happiest times of his life and he felt very privileged to finish his school life as head boy.

He took a gap year working in a school near Pretoria, South Africa.

During his time in Birmingham he has won many prizes and participated in numerous student productions as part of his course.

He did not tell his parents he had entered the X Factor so it was a surprise and a very exciting time for them.

No-one prepares you for the press invasion into your life as a parent when something like this happens.

I would ask that people in Wales do not believe some of the horrid things that have been said about him in the press, judge him on his ability to sing and entertain.

Malcolm, Rhyd's dad is an electrical contractor and definitely not a millionaire as stated in one Sunday paper!

His Mum Angela works for a Carers Charity called Crossroads Caring for Carers, who give breaks to family carers.

Rhydian has said that if successful in the X Factor he hopes to be in a position to make a donation to Crossroads in Wales.

Rhydian is a loving, caring and happy person and when performing makes every effort to give it his all. He said the other week that he is living his dream at the moment and is very grateful to all at the X Factor for giving him this opportunity.

The X Factor have set up a my space (myspace/xfactor-rhydian) site for the competitors and Rhyd writes a weekly blog so you can catch up with news from him. You can also post messages which he gets copies of, as they do not have access to the internet in the X Factor house."

Rhydian has compiled an audio diary for BBC Radio Cymru's Dylan and Meinir Show whilst competing in The X Factor.

He wowed the judges on 27 October 2007 with his rendition of 'The Phantom of The Opera.'

After the performance Simon Cowell stated that Rhydian was 'potentially World Class'.

On 2 November he sang a rendition of Pink's 'Get The Party Started'.

On 9 November he cemented his position as favourite to win the competition with his version of 'You Raise Me Up'

On 16 November The Pet Shop Boys' Go West was given the Rhydian Roberts treatment leaving him in the last six.

A week later a solid performance of 'Somewhere' from West Side Story ensured that Rhydian reached the final five.

On 1 December his show-opening song - Queen's 'Somebody To Love' impressed the voters enough to ensure his place in the semi-final.

The semi-final produced Rhydian's best performance yet, with a stand-out performance of You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel and a breathtaking rendition of Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water.

This meant that Rhydian joined Leon and Same Difference in the final on 15 December.

Rhydian was 3/1 on favourite with the bookmakers before going into the final but was beaten into second place by 18-year-old Leon Jackson.On finals night Rhydian sang O Holy Night, Somewhere - which had reduced judge Danii Minogue to tears when he had performed it in a previous round - and a duet of You Raise Me Up with Katherine Jenkins.

In January 2008 Rhydian Roberts signed a record deal with Sony BMG.

Sony BMG has the rights to all artists represented by judge Simon Cowell including Rhydian, Leon Jackson and former X Factor winners Leona Lewis and Shayne Ward.

Rhydian stated on BBC Radio Wales that new material is being penned for his debut album. He also confirmed that Jim Steinman has shown an interest and will be writing some songs after seeing Rhydian sing "I'd Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That)" on YouTube. There may also be a couple of covers but he refuses to record an X Factor memorabilia album.

Rhydian's eponymously titled album, which took a year to record, is released in November 2008. The album includes covers of Simon and Garfunkel, Meatloaf and Queen songs on the record.

In December 2008, Rhydian will be singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" with Charlotte Church on the christmas special of her chat show.

He will a,lso be hitting the road for a 16-date UK tour in 2009.

The tour starts at Nottingham Royal Centre on Friday May 1 and ends at Sheffield City Hall on Saturday May 23.

The singer returns to ITV1's The X Factor on Saturday 22 November to perform his new single, The Impossible Dream.

He is simply the best young man with a great great talent, i would be delighted to be able to buy his 1st cd or album ! I record phantom of the of the opers and all his other songs on the ex factor and i play them every morning because they bring me such joy ! I am un able to get out of the house as I had a stroke age 40,and have no short term memory,but he makes me feel like living. I have been told i have another stroke or heart attack i will not survive it,which fills me with sadnes. I am married to a wonderful husband, have a daughter and son,who have flown the nest and making their own way in life, i also have a grand daughter aged 3 and a half, i hope i will still be alive to see her go to school ! My husband works relentesley and then comes home and looks after my every need. I would like for them all to have a break away from my problems. However the medicie in the world is That Mr and Mrs Rhydian have a handsome son with with a beautiful amazing voice and that is what keeps me going. Hello to everyone on the BBC Wales website. Can I just say how overwhelmed I am to see all your message poems etc and to receive all your letters and gifts. I will try and get to reply to as many as possible but I only have 24 hours at home to do this. BUT please be assured that you all mean so much to me. My holiday in Mexico was fine but sadly I was poorly for the first 10 days, ( with man flu!) Doc said chest infection and I am still coughing. Although devasted when I heard that he was runner up to Leon, I realised that Leon was given a tremendous boost by the general public - but Rhydian didn't need to win this competition. I never used to watch the XFactor... until that very evening when my eldest demanded that I watched and listened to Rhydian's Phantom rendi-revelation! The four of us (parents and children) immediately fell in love with Rhydian's incredible talent, which is very addictive. I think, it's over now. However, I still visit Rhydian's website because I am his fan. There may be a problem with phone line. But, I used mobile phone. I could get through easily. I voted for Rhyd almost immediately after he sang the first song. Although I didn’t see telephone number for voting on while he was singing.. I had to guess and it was right. At the end it was very difficult after I got news that only 1 % different. I only got through a few calls as it was busy. People who had problems with phone call, you might phone at the last minute.

After watching him perform live on stage last Friday night in Cardiff for the news,I waited with many others for the chance of an autograph.Unfortunatly there were just too many people and the chance passed me by and Rhyd went back into the City Hall.Myself and another young girl (who was sobbing her poor heart out) continued to wait in the freezing cold in the hope he would come back out...the wait paid off. He came over to us even though his `minders' wanted him back inside.He kindly signed autographs for us and I managed to take a few treasured photos...Bless you Rhydian! ..I have mild spina bifida (although I do not use a wheelchair) and I have an artificial leg, but you took time from your busy schedule to come over and say hello.I wish you luck with whichever road you choose to go down.

I was appalled by the X-Factor result. It has been patently obvious from the outset that Rhydian was head and shoulders above the others in this tacky talent show/zoo. As an Ex-70's DJ I would have put Rhydian first and Same Difference second. SD rekindled the joy that I found in the cheesy '70's tracks that used to delight my audiences back then. It was wrong for the X-F producers to bill the final as an international event between the three home countries. It created a false rivalry which made voters support the contestant from their region - they should have been evaluated as individual acts. I was totally%! 20infuriated and jumping up and down long before the end. Very disappointing for Rhyd but he's going to be the all-time winner for decades after this shabby effort on ITV's part will be long-forgotten. The only way that the TV talent show genre will regain its respectability will be by disposing of the phone-in and returning to competitions solely adjudicated by well-respected and authoritative judges who know what they are talking about. Shows should also be exclusively confined to the performance. A plethora of interviewed blubbers and sob stories simply distorts the result at the expense of truly talented contestants.

Realistically its a joke that Rhydian didn't win - as a Scot I can recall drunks...shouting in the street (what I thought was a football chant) only - to my surprise to hear "Leeeooon X Factor" - so once again sentimental scots will vote with a hint of jingoism and sentimentality a truely mediocre talent in comparison to an obviously superior performer. Again its why we were last season subjected to the MacDonald Twins...People don't realise that the winner is not 'gifted' a succesful career, only a probable xmas no 1 - and no amount of hope can make the boy or girl with the sob story, the ill mum, dead father etc a success in the long term. I was really disappointed on the voting. I use virgin media for all 3services, I kept calling to vote and the first hour, I couldnt get through at all.So I told my wife, maybe once I dial its been registered. But when same difference was out, and it was announced it was 1% I kept on dailing, and only got through 5 times for Rhydian. Am quite upset this sort of irregularity would take place. The first winner this year was the public. X-Factor has found talent, and in the final were three very different, very distinct talents. Same Difference would be well placed if deals can be set to give them a TV series to suit the joy, fun and ethics they can lavish on the young and anyone else who likes a good dose of cheer-me-up. Leon may not be mine or others favorite style, but he has a popularity for what he does and, when you take in mind that he is still develping, it bodes well for the future under good mentorship. Rhydian, as few would disagree, has a phenonmenal talent, and I just hope he continues to please us all in whatever he chooses to do, but at the same time does not go away from what will keep him happy. When Rhydian is happy in his performing so are we. Voting problem? Let the watchdog follow up and report on the complaints, and let the producers correct anything that needs before the next series. The show is over so lets now enjoy these talents as they come on. I only hope we are not left having to wait too long, I want to hear/see Rhydian and Same Difference early in 2008 - they did their part for the show and its producers, so they ought to have earned a right to start entertaining us as the professionals they should be.

I think Rhydian did extremely well in the X Factor. I'm not Welsh and found it frustrating that the judges constantly harped on about Wales voting for him, because although I'm sure that's true, there were many other British people supporting Rhydian, too, in recognition of his talent. As for not winning, it was clearly a shock to everyone, but really there are only 2 British talent show winners who have genuinely succeeded - Will and Girls Aloud. The runners up seem to do very well for themselves, as I'm sure will Rhydian. Rhydian was amazing every single week on X Factor. However I don't believe that there was a voting scandal. I think the main problem was that most of the Rhyddler's fans automatically assumed that someone with such a great voice could not fail to win against Leon and Same Difference. I didn't actually vote because I assumed he wouldn't need my vote...oops, sorry about that! In the long run it may actually enhance Rhydian's career; instead of having to do as he is told by the record label (see where that got Shane Ward and that Steve bloke who won it one year?) he will be able to become a successful artist in his own right and follow his heart. He is unique and quite frankly was too good for X Factor.

I thought the result of X-factor was laughable. No way has Leon got a voice that is consistent and consistent you must be if you want to do live shows! Recordings can be made to sound good but live shows can't and that was proved during the live X-factor shows...It would be far better on these final shows to have 5 independent judges, I say 5 so there can't be a tied vote. I disagree, If the X Factor was based only on Opera/Classical Rhydian would have won. But he is NOT a pop singer, he tried to hit the high note with Katherine Jenkins and blew it there, he screeched...Like I have said on a few pages about all this everyone did their best on the x-factor but only 1 could win..and that had to be Leon he got the Voice to be a Pop singer. He sung that last song of the night great, but Rhydian didn't. Rhydian is a Opera/Classical Singer and NOT every one is into that type of music. I'm a proud Welsh grandmother and I voted for Leon the lines were busy there too but I kept trying and when I could not get anywhere with the phone I text my vote. So come on ther was nothing wrong NO fix at all the right person won. And im behind him 101%, he deserved to win. Rhydian will be okay in his own right, he already made a song - made in wales he was having voice training so he will be OK out all this. but Leon is the POP star not Rhydian.

As you see, I'm not from Wales, nor do I have any Welsh blood but I am an avid Rhydian fan. It is stated here that he can sing only one type of music true, wonderful, tuneful music. Leon can't sing in tune at all. It is also stated that Rhyd fan's didn't try hard enough to vote. I had my phone on re-dial throughout the programme, yes the whole time the voting was open, and the line was engaged the whole time. How can the best man win, if he cannot receive votes. Time will tell who is the best and there is absolutely no doubt who that is, Rhydian!!

The telephone lines were engaged with a BT announcement that you have not been charged for this call.This was repeated and repeated, it is very odd that a show that has always attracted many votes at Semi and Final stages in previous shows were not prepared for the volume of traffic the phone lines would receive this time.After all, isn't it this that makes the show financially successful for those who stage it?Maybe they should devise someway of allowing only one vote from one telephone line?There is a Rhydian Roberts song available for 79p on itunes, found it by typing in his name in the search and bought the download.He should get more songs onto itunes and become a success by himself.The Scots lad was a nice boy and a good singer, but Rhydian was unique as well as good.Happy Christmas Rhydian .. I think that Rhydian has real talent, but I didn't like the choices of songs he was given - why didn't he sing some Tom Jones songs, or even George Michael or Christina Aquilera? I also didn't think that the opera singer complimented his voice as she drowned him out - why didn't they choose some one a bit more modern and contemporary. But having said all that I do hope he gets a record deal - and not one that just does English Folk Songs that no one will buy, but one which will take him to the top of the charts as he has got a great voice. By the way I also couldn't get through to vote on Saturday night, I must have tried 20 - 30 times but with no luck!

I was in London Oct/Nov to take care of my Mother, when I happened to watch the X Factor. Was struck by not only the distinct sound of Rhydian's voice, but by his professional presentation of the varied songs that he sang. And I loved Let's Get the party started and Go West! He was Great! I began to look forward to his performance each week - he was the STAR of the show. Have followed up the show on-line since returning to Toronto. He definitely should have won the competition, if it had been judged on merit. Rhydian has an exceptional talent. X Factoris a talent show, its NOT Pop Idol as some people seem to think. If the choice of winner were based on talent, graciousness, poise and performance then Rhydian IS the obvious winner. Only watched X Factor to hear Rhydian sing. Outstanding! He will have a great career - with the right advice and guidance.Totally disgusted with X Factor and their treatment of contestants. Impuning people's integrity, dodgy editing, judges' slanging matches etc. It may be so-called entertainment but they are dealing with people's lives. I used to audition students as part of my job. It was marvellous to discover genuine talent. We had funny moments too - but we never forgot that we were dealing with people's dreams. I used to enjoy X Factor - it reminded me of a job I loved. Of course we're proud of our country, in the same way all nationalities the world over are proud of theirs. That is nothing to be ashamed of!I don't think that turning the X-Factor into a nationalism argument solves anything. Rhydian is a better and more classical singer but he was competing on a pop programme. The pop kid won. If Same Difference had triumphed, I suspect the we'd be hearing the same arguments, just anti-English instead of anti-Scottish. Rhydian now has the opportunity to choose which deals to accept and forge his own path in the industry, a luxury which Leon will not enjoy. Clearly there were problems with the voting system for both contestants.And you know what? Life's not fair. If it was all fair and predictable, what a boring place it would be! To be honest, the controversy has probably done Rhydian some commercial favours anyway.

I was just wondering if this X factor vote was affected by a larger percentage of Leon voters using text phones and also that as many of the Rhydian voters were more more likely to be older people and /or spirtually orientated they did not know they could or should vote more than once for the same entrant on the night? Rhydian certainly brought a whole new type of viewer to the programme who may not have known about the play off at the end when a lot of folks voted AGAIN. Something has engineered this crazy vote and there must be an answer. Rhydian is already a superb singing star. The result on Saturday was clearly wrong - but in the end it will not matter. Rhydian has a very rare talent ... I really am looking forward to hearing his first cd and to performances on tv and the stage.

Not normally listen to much opera as kids and grandkids not up for it, but... Rhydian was by far the best singer, and his presentation perfect also before the show reached the conclusion you could tell by the remarks made by the judges that Leon was the winner before ever the final votes were supposedly counted. We will not be buying Leon's record not because we don't like him but he sounds so tinny by comparison it is a laugh. If there are any music producers out there reading this then I hope they snap Rhydian up, as not just this but do many more out there will snap it up. Go for it Rhydian boy you are the tops. The result was an absolute travesty of justice if the choice be based on true talent, charisma, sheer power and an ability to sell records, Rhydian outstripped them all by leagues! Every once in a while be it in music or stage or sport one individual comes along and re-writes the rule book. Usually it is a sense precocious brilliance not previously witnessed. I don't believe anyone will disagree with me I say this is the yardstick by which we see Rhydian. Quality in vocal ability, charisma and sheer ability are the trade marks I have seen of what appears to be a smashing young man. As a parent of children who are Rhydian's contemporaries I understand what your parents feel in terms of pride at your terrific achievements. My only sour note on this whole X-Factor journey relates to the obvious - the result was a farce! Cowell's comments after the final song last night were a disgrace - he should be asked to explain himself - those comments gave a string of your votes to Leon (a nice young lad & good luck to him but he ain't in the same league). My contention is that the organisers wanted Leon to win so he gets the record deal and xmas #1 - a career well started For Rhydian it is a back-handed compliment - because they know you will succeed right to the top anyway.

I too feel that Rhydian was robbed last night and it did little for the credibility of the X Factor (all too much emotive stuff). Like many people, the only reason I watched the programme was to see his performance. Saturday evenings won't be the same again (until he gets a one-man show). I can speak on behalf of my daughter (in her 20s) and Mum (in her 80s) too. If he ever gives a show at the Opera House here, we will all be in the front row. Also, he absolutely MUST record 'Somewhere' and 'You raise me up' - I'll fund it myself if necessary! Mum and Dad Roberts, you have a real star. How lucky you are. He is truly excellent and, dare I say it, unique. I so look forward to being a fan of his for many years and looking back to these early days....Yes, Rhydian, I too believe you were put on this earth to perform. I shed tears of emotion during Rhydian's performances last night! I again cried when I listened to the repeat this afternoon. And I shed tears of anger and frustration when the final result was announced. My two daughters (14 and 10) were also inconsolable. My husband is disgusted. So now, we pray that God gives us the right answers as to why Rhydian did not win against all expectations. It is my belief that Rhydian made only one mistake on the whole of the x-factor series and that is by appearing on it in the first place. I firmly believe that Rhydian's vocal ability is miles above any prevous competitor or indeed winner of this series. Rhydian, even with established stars it is not often I find a singer genuinely moving. You have the rare ability to take a song that's been covered by almost everyone and still make it completely fresh and convincing and you have done that consistently. We were absolutely shocked and appalled that you didn't win the X Factor, Rhydian. We mean no offence to Leon, who is a nice enough young man, but he is just not in the same league as you, which is why the result was so shocking. I was unable to get through on the phone lines, and believe me I tried EVERY minute for about an hour an a half. My daughter, who lives in West Suffolk, had to vote for all of us here at her home in Wales (she'd already voted three times for you, on behalf of her little family) and she got through straight away each time. Last night, after the results, my husband and I felt that questions should be asked about the way the phones were managed, as I believe I should have been able to get through at LEAST once. This has happened before, Rhydian, when G4 came second to Steve, but soon wiped him off the map. We have NOT heard the last of you - your superb voice, your limitless range, and your lovely personality. We can't wait to buy your first CD (and all the CDs you're going to release in the future).

My advice is "Maria" from Westside Story. I would love that. This would be best. (Also I like Sondheim's Send in the Clowns but mostly Maria). You have the range to reach the high notes as well as being able to drive the beautiful melody - and the girls would love it.

Rhydian, i loved your voice in the first audition and I still love it now. You've only gotten better. 'You raise me up' was your best performance, it literally brought me to tears! I'm a singer too but I'd never have the guts to go on X Factor with an opera voice! Still not too sure about the campness of Go West (never liked the song really.) I even got the words wrong and actually sang 'go east' thanks to that Chinese advert, but hey never mind! You looked good in the uniform so you pulled it off!
