Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin One of the most popular and influential rock bands of the 1970s, with strong connections with Mid Wales

Born:
1968
Place of Birth:
U.K.
"Credit must be given to BRON-YR-AUR a small derelict cottage in South Snowdonia for painting a somewhat forgotten picture of true completeness which acted as an incentive to some of these musical statements". (Led Zeppelin III sleeve notes) Led Zeppelin
Biography:
On any Led Zeppelin pilgrimage, there are several must-see sites for dedicated followers - among them, Bron-yr-Aur cottage near Machynlleth in Powys.

Bron-yr-Aur is a small cottage just outside the town of Machynlleth and it was to this quiet corner of Powys that one of the world's biggest rock bands escaped in May 1970, after a gruelling 15-month tour. Here, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote much of the material which appears on the Led Zeppelin III album. The Bron-yr-Aur track on their Physical Graffiti album was also written during this time.

It's thought that Page and Plant returned to the cottage again in 1994 to write material for their MTV Unplugged session No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded. The video was also filmed at one of the nearby Corris slate quarries.

Bron-yr-Aur is no longer a derelict cottage. It's now a private family home but back in the seventies, it didn't have electricity or gas. When they were staying there, the members of Led Zep are said to have trekked down to the nearest town of Machynlleth for a weekly bath at the Glyndwr Hotel.

Some of the scenes for The Song Remains the Same movie were also filmed in Wales. In The Rain Song, Robert Plant is seen sailing across the sea in a small boat flying the Welsh flag - a sequence shot between Aberystwyth and Ynyslas. Locals also say the band would sometimes do an impromptu jamming session at the bandstand on the prom at Aberystwyth.

Brought my first Zeppelin albums while in Malta on my hols. I was very into prog rock going to every concert at the Wolverhampton civic hall back in the 70s with bands like Emerson lake & Palmer and of cause Led Zeppelin got my albums signed by the bands of the day and are now part of my collection. I also buy & sell music but these albums are part of my youth prog past and I will never sell!!

I am currently researching Led Zep’s time in Mid Wales in order to produce a radio documentary. These anecdotes have been a great inspiration and help so far, and I am now looking for some eye-witness contributors for the show, someone who was at the King’s Hall gig or perhaps you made a Zep sighting in Machynlleth around their time in Bron-Yr-Aur? The programme will be in Welsh so if any of you are Welsh speakers and would be willing to help that would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to contact me through this thread. Thanks

The legendary King's Hall concert was on Jan 16th 73..I was one of many Aber students there, unable to believe our amazing luck that a band of the magnitude of LZ was actually going to play there! Aber was usually well off the radar... It was an unforgettable experience & I've often wondered if the band had any idea how big a deal it was for us.. I still love telling young LZ fans that I saw them play live in 73, just to see their jaws drop! 35 years on and I still love their music.

May 25th 1975 - Opened with Rock n Roll and it still brings back that fantastic feeling of awe and excitement when I hear it now. Best memory though was when they'd finished their set, and encores (we thought) and as many (mad?) people were leaving , they came back on to do another encore. I've never moved so bloody fast in my life to get near the front. They were the complete package then, and, whilst I couldn't justify a ticket for the O2 I have no doubt that they blow away every freeloading "star" who turned up to watch them that night. Never to be forgotten, never to be surpassed! .

In 1978 I was an "A" Level student in Whitland Grammar School. And like all sixth formers at the time, Zeppelin were the tops and most played band in the Sixth form room!! One of the Bank Holiday weekends was looming - Whitsun I think, and I had heard a whisper through the family grapevine that something big was happening in Pendine over the weekend. Robert Plant was an aquaintance of a cousin of mine who lived at Red Roses, and I was reliably informed that "The" Mr. Plant was staying with him over the weekend, and furthermore would be doing a live turn at The Silverdales Caravan Club in Pendine on%! 20the Saturday night. Unbeleivable - well so thought everyone I told in school leading up to the wekend. That was except for one - who met me in Pendine and trekked to Silverdales coinciding with the end of the bingo!!! The ceilings in the club were probably only 10 foot high as the group were introduced as Melvin and the Marauders. And who was the front man - none other than Robert Plant!! What a night, two and a half hours of raw rock 'n' roll and the amazing vocals of this Rock God. An incredible experience that I still remember vividly to this day. Oh what joy it was to return to school and tell the "Zeppers" that - Yes, HE ACTUALLY WAS IN PENDINE, and oh, it was awesome...

Well it just seems a few years ago when I was sitting in the Talbot Inn in Stourbridge on Christmas eve minding my own business when this tramp with golden locks parks himself next to me, accompanied by a bevie of females with equal flowing hair. It didnt take me long to recognise that husky voice, looked up from me pint and there he was, old Planty himself. Looked as if he had just come off the allotment. Dazed and confused? You bet I was.

I was at both the Knebworth concerts, but my claim to fame is beating Mr Plant at pool at the Sloop Inn in Llandogo in the Wye Valley - he had a house nearby on the Welsh side and sometimes dropped in for a beer in the early 80's - he even chatted the (now) wife up when she worked behind the bar!

Never been even close to the Ledz. I'm 27, from Lebanon and currently living in Europe. There have always been a lot of speculations and invented myths about the Ledz back home. I remember growing up with articles printed by the government aiming at banning their music popping up every now and then. Maybe it was a good thing, allowing me to explore many of beautful artists out there, but the truth is that since the day I started listening to Led Zeppelin, everything I have ever heard just stopped making sense. My true dream is to meet one of the old believers and hear their endless stories about the magic of Led Zeppelin, the artists and the persons.

I saw Page and Plant playing in 1995 on the Unledded Tour and again twice in 1998 on the Walking into Clarksdale tour.I have seen Robert Plant playing live about 7 times since,Ive never seen a bad show, this guy always surpasses me when he plays live.I would love to go to the one off show in London...why play in a venue that only holds 20,000 people,Wembley Stadium,Finsbury Park,or even Knebworth again would have made more sense.

Like so many comments here, I endorse everything said about Led Zep.They were the greatest live band I've ever seen.I saw them at Earls Court on Friday 23 May 1975. Four hours, including a 45 minutes encore.I still have the ticket, but I gave away the programme. If anyone has one to sell, contact me via this site.My biggest thrill was meeting Robert Plant at Yales Cafe in Wrexham in 1999, when he was playing with the Priory Of Bryon. He signed my Led Zep book, then I sat in wonder for an hour, listening to him go through all the tech stuff before going on stage.

I've seen Robert Plant solo in concert and Page-Plant in concert. I can only imagine what a tight Led Zep would be like. I can't believe that Jason can handle the long impromptu jam sessions that were really anchored by Bonzo and JPJ. Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused have to be the most unbelievable impromptu performances. Many people can memorize the individual songs, but nobody is ever going to replace what Led Zep did with those songs and others. We can only hope the songs they choose to sing will live up to the albums.

Went to one of the Knebworth gigs in '79 - the greatest show ever by he greatest band ever - Zepp III I rate as tops! Saw Robert & Jimmy at the Rocks in Sydney in 1994 - they both took time out to talk to me and my wife (also a fan!) Managed to get the photo and they signed a page of my Oz guide book ripping the page in the process...

I am 41 now and was coming of age into music in the 70's when my older brother broke me from pop music by playing Led Zeppelin- I was and still am enamoured by this magical music. I shook Roberts hand once - I was at an LA Kings game (the old forum) in the late 80's and managed to walk into the owners box. Security tried to push me out but I said "I love Led Zeppelin", and Robert, hearing this, pushed aside security and shook my hand and kindly signed an autograph. I saw him live at the Universal Ampitheater later and he played several Zep classics. (I bought a ticket for that brother that introduced me to them). Best band of all time.

I saw Led Zeppelin at the 1st of the Earls Court concerts in 75 [May 17th]. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this band?? No mater what other music comes along good bad and otherwise, Led Zeppelin always draw you back to their orbit, weaving that magical spell over you time and time again. Like the Beatles the previous decade they just sat head and shoulders above all other bands [exept the WHO, but thats another story.]I saw [and met]Robert Plant in 81 when he played at the blue note club in Derby [my home town] with the Honey drippers. Great gig... managed to take a few photos of Robert on stage [with my black and white polaroid camera] and got one of me and him plus a yong woman after the show. Memories....!

I had the awesome pleasure of meeting all of Led Zep about a year before the sad,sad death of John Bonham, they came to stay at Clearwell castle to record in John Mayalls mobile studio, they were crazy, but lovely and stayed for a couple of weeks, drank loads and told WILD stories, met Robert Plant several times afterwards as he bought a property in Pennallt and drank in the local and in the Nags Head, Monmouth. Hope we can get tickets for the reunion....

I've never seen led zeppelin in concert even if it's my favorite band ever. But I've seen robert plant in his first solo tour in montreal. After the concert, there was alot of encores and it seems like I got out the arena too soon, thinking it was finished but it wasn't.I'm happy that I left because the best thing happened right after.I went to get my car and as i was passing by the arena,I saw the limos getting out the building and decided to follow. They stoped at a restaurant in the old montreal. The limo driver told me that he knew I was following and told Robert Plant that turned back to look and said it's ok he's alone we'll receive him.Imagine the smile I had when the driver told me that.So standing outside the restaurant talking with the driver,I just couldn't beleive I was gonna meet Robert Plant then the driver told me he couldn't wait any longer for the band to get out so he left but before he told me to tell them to call him when they need him. After awhile, the band get out and there I was standing on the sidewalk in front of them.Robert came to me and said.are you the guy that was following us? I said yes I am, and then he stayed there for an hour to talk with me.This is something I'll never forget,I was 18 back then. What a memory...

Saw Zeppelin at Knebworth 79, called round Roberts house in Kinver once and met his parents - Robert was away, I asked them if they could ring me when he returned as I would love to meet him. Imagine my suprise when his father called. I then met Robert on his birthday and watched him perform that night at JB's club in Dudley. Now I'm just waiting for him to come to Australia.

I saw Led Zep in 1975 at Earls Court on their last gig in the UK for a long time. I was 17 and had heard a few of their albums, even so, this did not in any way prepared me for what I was about to experience. Above the stage hung two huge speakers, I believe they called them "Super Troupers" ....when John Bonham opened up with the first beats of "rock and roll" , I swear it knocked hundreds of people over. The next four..yes four hours were unbelievable,incredible...32 years later, and after seing dozens of good bands,I still believe this was the best gig I have ever seen. The memory of that night will never leave me. Thankyou so much.

Just wanna say that Led Zep and then Robert and Jimmy have moulded me into the person I am today, the same goes for my best mate Dowsett who has also been moulded. We last saw Robert on the dreamland tour in Portsmouth, was wicked, we have made the pilgrimage to Bron and are hoping to spend some time on the Cadar Idris again this summer, see you all up there.I'm the tall guy with a permanant smile , he's the guy who looks like he's out of lord of the rings hahaha we've both been zep heads for about 25 yrs, sure we;re into alsorts but zep at the core. hope to see you all at the Green Man festival in August

Reading these articles is aweing, I have been a Zep fan since age 20. How I envy those of you who saw them live. My only chance was to have come just after the untimely death of Bonzo. I love to read your notes, somehow, it brings me a little closer to what I never will see.(R.P. is very interested in all things Celtic, I'm told), me too. My family history is from Wales. Once at a medieval fair I bought a flag, white and green with a red dragon...only later did I learn it is the Welsh flag. Celtic blood, Celtic roots, Led-Zep, Robert Plant, and so much more, in Wales... now, "its calling me, back home". Wish I could have flown on THAT Zeppelin:)

In May of 1995, my daughter was in 7th grade here in RI. One day in May I signed her out of school at 11 am and told her we needed to go somewhere. We drove 4 1/2 hrs to The Meadowlands in NJ without tickets to hopeful see Page and Plant( not quite Zep but as close as I'd ever get to the real thing). No one was selling tickets to the obviously soldout show. We were walking near a gate and they opened up for us. Needless to say, I grabbed her hand and we ran to the box office to find they had 2 tickets, 7th row in the middle aisle. Absolutely incredible show. There was a guy a row behind us taking pictures and I gave him my business card with $20 and a note that simply said, Please send pictures. A week later still floating 10ft in the air from seeing "THE BAND", I received an envelope with 36 pictures from the 8th row! My favorite picture is me looking at my daughter and her looking at me and Robert Plant looking like he is singing to her! "Thank You" for my wedding song 12 years before that and it would be very fitting for me to say to Zep right now on here, Thank You for the Passion, Intensity, the Color and Shape of the most powerful music thats ever entered my ears and rattled around in my brain!

1994. I was driving , and the local radio station was giving some information about the gig that that same night Aerosmith was playing in Buenos Aires.. and somehow they mentioned the rumour that Jimmy Page was in town and would join them on stage... There I went, and It happened to be true! He joined them for "the train kept a rolling", and I guess half of the stadium was there to see him. ( Zeppelin never played anywhere in South America)

I saw Zep. at Earls Court and Knebworth, they were and are the greatest band ever, an experience I will cherish all my life. When I was into them at first in the early seventies people said they're only a group, you won't hear of them in five years time.......how wrong they were. I couldn't believe it when Planty and his band played in my town a few years ago, a real surreal experience. Thanks Zep. you've enriched my life.

What better place than the Welsh hills and valleys to gain inspiration for music and song? The Froncysllte Male Voice Choir are on the brink of "stardom". They, along with their Director and Conductor are very unassuming and cordial people. Their vocal talent will hopefully introduce and inspire many people to appreciate the Voices of Wales.

I'm in the US/ Houston Texas. I've seen Robert and Page/Plant together about 10 times. They are the greatest gifts to music we have ever had from our Most High God. I guess I am one lucky fellow. I got to see Zep 4 times in my life. I saw Robert each time he came to Vancouver. The music of Zep and Robert have been highlight's of my 62years. As I write this here, I am actually in the process of writing to Robert personally. He has agreed to receive my letter and I am sooo blown away by this that I am finding it hard to know what to say to him. He has heard all the accolades before. You can see my dilemma.

My wife and I have recently been on a bit of a pilgrimage to Machynlleth and 'Bron-yr-aur'. As I looked upward along the steep road leading to the cottage, I decided that to to take notice of a sign at the bottom declaring the hill unsuitable for motor vehicles would have to be ignored, in the interests of avoiding resperatory failure. Have vague memories of meeting John Bonham and his son when they came down to PD to fish circa 75/76. I was 14ish and not fully aware of who he was or his rock status. From what I remember a local guy Tommy Shone, whose son I hung out with, looked after a boat of John's that was moored in the Haven near Pennar Park. Got invited out with them for a day's fishing off St Annes Head. If anyone could confirm he had a boat in the area I might be able to add some substance to my memories.

Recently went to Wales for a few days, stayed at Pwllhelli. I had never been before and was sat on the beach one day reading my Led Zepp book - Hammer of the Gods and although I knew about Bron-yr-Aur cottage I didn't know its exact location and read that it was in the Snowdonia mountains. I decided there and then that I was going to find and visit the cottage. Having only one day left in Wales I knew this could prove difficult. I went straight to the nearest library and looked on the internet, managed to find directions to the village where the cottage was near. First sun light next morning I drove to Machynlleth and parked up my car. Walked up the mountain that I thought was the one and so it was, after catching my breath nearly at the top and looking down at the beautiful view below me I turned the corner and walked threw the trees, had to catch my breath again - Never before have I seen a cottage that meant so much to me, it was breathtaking. No one was in at the time so had a good look round and sat on the grass taking it all in and imagining Robert and Jimmy there. Looking through the window and saw the fire place where they had wrote many of their songs and I think that it has barely altered in the house furniture/decor wise. It was a great day and I think Wales is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever been to, but I do know that Led Zeppelin are the greatest band I have ever seen.

Queued overnight at Virgin Records in Swansea to get tickets for the Earl's Court show in 1975. Superb show. It's much easier to get tickets these days with the internet!! For the Knebworth show on 4th August 1979 I drove a Sherpa van with twelve people in it, six of whom I hadn't met until that day. One of those I met that day; Andrew Demery from Gorseinon is still a good mate and next month along with my family am going to stay with him in San Francisco where he now lives. Also in the van that day was my sixteen year old brother whom I was taking to his first festival. Unfortunately, my brother dropped his sleeping bag and when he bent over to pick it up was pushed to the floor. None of us could reach him in the crush and his life was saved by some stranger who managed to pick him up off the floor by his hair.(We never saw the rucksack again, or my booze which was wrapped in it). I'm convinced he would have suffocated in the crush if it wasn't for the timely intervention by the stranger. We only told that story to our seventy eight year old mother last year. Her face was a picture when we told her.

What a great place! Jimmy Page and Planty did retreat to Bron-Yr-Aur to write songs for the albums, but Planty also lives in Artist's valley and me and my dad went up there just today. It's like a swiss shallet! And I heard a rumour that Planty does hs housework in a pink flowery apron!

I remember going to the King's Hall, Aberystwyth gig in 1973. Plant had a cold and barely gasped out the final words to Stairway to Heaven. Also they had lost some of their instruments/mandolin in transit and couldn't play one song. The hall wasn't full (again because most people thought it was a spoof), and it was reported in the Melody Maker that is was Led Zeppelin's worst concerts. However I thought they were absolutely fantastic. I saw them 4 times. Best band ever.

While a first year student at Aber in 1980 I took a train ride to Mach. Fog was really thick as I left the station and headed over the Dovey bridge. Walked up the hill to Bron-yr-Aur and just as I reached the top of the climb I emerged out of the clouds into brilliant sunshine. Sat around and enjoyed the view from the vantage point of the cottage. Looked as if the Corris Valley had been covered by a glacier with just the hill tops showing out of the white. Truly getting away from it all.

I used to work on the door on the Bay and got told off by my boss for letting "that man" in for free. I told him that Robert Plant had just walked past me and he said...er...ok...good work, before disappearing red-faced!

I am only 15 years old but have just now discovered Led Zeppelin and their many wonders. I wish I was alive when Led Zeppelin was playing. I am now doing a sophmore term paper on Led Zepplein and have grown on them. Led Zeppelin are the best there ever was!

This legendary band - with so many connections to the small town of Machynlleth - is this year celebrating. several anniversaries. This last weekend saw them receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards (in my opinion long overdue) and as they collected the awards, you could not help but wonder how proud the late John Henry Bonham would have been if he had lived to see this - the drummer who used to play in the Drill Hall, Machynlleth, all those years ago. In September this year, it is 25 years since the death of John Henry Bonham. Also, in May this year, it is thirty years since The Earls Court Concerts in which the famous song 'Stairway to Heaven' was played. This of course was written in Robert Plant's Welsh home in the beautiful Artist Valley. In December of the same year - 1975 - it was announced that the band were to spilt up. Thankfully their beautiful music lives on.

I saw Led Zeppelin at Knebworth August 4th 1979. I had a smile for a whole week, cause I had to wait so long. My brother saw them play at Earl's Court - I so badly wanted to see them play then but being only 14 at the time it was totally ruled out... so the long 4 year wait was truely outstanding when they performed. It was like my biggest dream coming true and I was living it!! ( I add, yes I sung 'you'll never walk alone' in the crowd which can be heard on the Led Zeppelin DVD Knebworth 79). In 1980, I went to work in Germany and I could not believe my luck that Led Zeppelin played a gig in Manhiem some 60 miles down the road... I was about 20 feet from the amazing show that was played in a tent (yes, I said tent...) I saw Robert Plant in his solo show NOW AND ZEN play the Royal Court in the mid 1980s. I also saw Robert Plant play in 2003 with Strange Sensation in Liverpool uni (I got my scratch plate of my Les Paul signed by Sking, Robert's lead guitarist). I did manage to get a concert poster off the wall in the uni gig and it hangs on my son's bedroom wall. I have just got two ticket's to see Robert Plant & Strange Sensation perform at the Carling Academy, Liverpool, on 1st of April so myself and my son are so much looking forward to seeing the band play again. From 1972, first hearing Led Zep, to losing out on 1975 to come full circle to 2005, it's been a life full of ZEP!! Thus far!!!

Last year we, and a few friends went on a mission to find Bron-yr-Aur cottage. It took about a good hour from the bottom of the hill to get there. The road went from tarmac to a dirt track, to no road at all. Then just over the brow of the hill there it was! What an amazing place, we could see why Robert and Jimmy chose there to escape. There was no one at home, so we just sat on the slate bench, had a JD each, played Goin to California on the walkman, then left. Mindblowing!

.... yes, I was one of the lucky ones who saw Led Zepplin in the King's Hall in January 1973 (concert tickets were advertised in a tiny block ad in the Cambrian News just before Christmas 1972 - everyone thought it was a spoof!) ... and yes, members of the band could be seen in various drinking establishments in and around Aber. Seen Led Zepplin perform on a number of occasions but the King's Hall gig was by far the most memorable.

Sure enough Robert Plant did/does own a property in Artists Valley, and he used to drink in my Nain and Taid's pub, The White Lion, Talybont. I know my Mum and grandparents met him a few times, but I was too young (approx 7 or 8) to appreciate who he was.

I saw Led Zeppelin at the Oakland gig in 69 when "Whole Lotta Love" just hit the air waves, and my girlfriend back then, who I had met again in 1990, Valerie, still remembered the loss of hearing she had for days afterwards and said,"I still remembered Led Zeppelin concert you took me to after all these past years,"... I saw the Plant/Page gig in 99, I think it was great too!

Rock God Robert Plant has a mortal side. I saw him the other day in the Spar post office in Talybont, about 3 miles from his house. He was buying thirty second class stamps to send his Christmas cards. Merry Christmas Mr Plant.

I saw Zep in '75 in Los Angeles, had tix for '76 but the crash cancelled that one, and saw them in '77 in Oakland. Also saw Plant & Page in '95 in St. Louis...they did a lot of old LZ stuff, incl. "Hey, hey, What Can I Do?" which I don't believe they'd ever done live before. We had flooding at that time here, not as bad as in '93, but still, and when they did "When the Levee Breaks" the crowd went wild.

I once bumped into Robert Plant at Cropredy Festival. I was so star struck I fell to my knee's and cried "We're not worthy" ala Wayne's World. Needless to say he was not impressed, but I have still remained a lifelong fan (being 27)...Favourite song, so far has to be "American Woman" a classic (although, I'm not sure if it matches Song Remains the Same, Rock and Roll, Black Dog, or Stairway....decisions decisions!!

Funny thing is, as I was reading this article the postman delivered a cd I had ordered. It is Superlungs by Terry Reid, the original choice of vocalist for Led Zeppelin but who had to turn the offer down as he had commitments in the states and Jimmy Page couldn'y wait for him to complete that tour and so, as Terry suggested Robert Plant and John Bonham were asked to join and the rest is history. Saw Zeppelin in Knebworth and Plant in Bridgend,Newport,Birmingham and somewhere else I can't remember. Patchy 70s amnesia.

When attending the welsh agricultural college we came across John Bonham and Jimmy Page on a farm walk organised by ADAS on hill land reclamation schemes. They turned up in a range rover with 'lord of the Rings' motif painted on the bonnet. I also attended the gig they did at the Kings Hall, and that was held to spite the door staff of the Uni who wouldnt let them in to watch a band performing at the Uni becuase they werent students.

Robert Plant could often be seen in the Central Pub back in the Eighties. He was more often than not a little worse for wear, and once propositioned the girlfriend (now wife) of a mate of mine. She was not at all amused!

Just to think - in the 70s I was into the Beatles and Stones and couldn't stand heavy rock! A few years ago I saw the light and now think Led Zep are the greatest! Also, one of my favourite parts of the UK to write their great music in that country cottage...

I live in the farm, just two houses from Mr Plant's residence. During my travels down the hill from home to UWA (where I studied for two years; 01-03), I would peek my head out the window over the tall grass and wonder if he is ever home. I think there are employed farmers to come tend the premises and keep the sheep in check. No such luck seeing Robert Plant so far. :( Anyway, love the music!
