Iolo Williams

Iolo Williams Former RSPB officer turned TV wildlife presenter.

Born:
1962
Place of Birth:
Builth Wells
School:
Llanfyllin High School
""What I always say about my job is that I'm being paid to do my hobby." Iolo Williams
Biography:

Iolo Williams was born in Builth Wells in 1962 and spent the first three months of his life in the village of Beulah. When his father got the job as headmaster of Eglwys Wen Primary School, the family moved to Pembrokeshire. They returned to Powys when Iolo was five and he grew up in Llanwddyn near Lake Vyrnwy.

He attended the village primary school before going on to Llanfyllin High School where he sat two A levels in Biology and French (and did very badly at both, he says).

As a teenager, he almost joined the army but instead went to college in London to study ecology. After graduating, he worked on a farm for eight months then spent time working in the timber trade.

At the beginning of 1985, Iolo got a job with the RSPB and spent the next 14 years working for the organisation. During this time, he became a regular on the media - on TV, radio and in newspapers - making a name for himself as a leading expert on Welsh birdlife.

His big TV break came in 1997 when BBC Wales approached him to work on a new series called Visions of Snowdonia which followed the lives of six people living and working on the slopes of the country's highest mountain. He was offered a second series - this time, Iolo was 'Birdman' and it's a name that has stuck.

Shortly afterwards, in 1999, Iolo decided to leave the RSPB and pursue a full-time career in the media. He has since filmed several more series with BBC Wales, including Wild Wales, Wild Winter, Iolo's Special Reserves, Iolo's Natural History of Wales and and his 2005 series, Iolo's Welsh Safari. He's also presented programmes made by independent tv company Telesgop for S4C.

In July 2003, the presenter walked 270 miles from North to South Wales in 11 days to raise money for two children's hospices, Ty Hafan and Ty Gobaith.

Iolo still lives in Powys - near the town of Newtown, not far from where he grew up. He is married and has two sons.

Hello iolo.i hope you are back in wales from your travels.I work at the prince philip hospital at Llanelli. Recently,we seem to have a pereguin falcon residing on top of the boiler house chmimney stacks. Blackbirds and seagulls have unsucsessfully tried to drive it away.If you pass this way, maybe you would like to call in to see for yourself.thank you.

I have just finished watching Iolo's wildlife experiences in Russia. What a wonderful series and what wonderful photography - pats on the back to the camera crews.Of course, the star is Iolo. He is, undoubtedly, a master of his art, and he puts it over in fine, down-to-earth style. Surely, he must be one of the best wildlife presenters on TV. Diolch yn fawr iawn, Iolo.

Hello Iolo,I'm not sure if you will remember me but we recently met at the Rhondda Bowl in Tonyrefail near the Rhondda Valley. But if you don't have the time to contact me I will fully understand, as you have your TV programs to film.Thank you for the opportunity.

I'd like to know what Iolo thinks about the pylons that will soon be on our doorstep. There are proposals for high overhead voltage cables on ugly wood and metal pylons 15m tall to run through part of the Kerry Valley which will ruin this beautiful unspoilt area. I foresee that features such as these will continue to invade this land because greed dictates it's too expensive for cables to go underground. Poor Mid Wales, your beauty is in the hands of electricity companies and Whitehall.

Very interested in the cameras on show tonight 21-10-2008. Our Family has some 40 acres we are trying to keep mainly for wild life, we have a web site "virtuallynatural.co.uk" and are trying to start some discussion on what is important to people. If you have any suggestions please pass it on, we would be greatful.

Just watched your piece on BBC about animal cruelty. Excelent these people need to be exposed. Their actions finaly, after many years, lead to things like bare knuckle fighting, and other gladiatorial persuts even to the Coliseum and all the horrors of that.

An absolute pleasure to meet you today, it's fantastic to see somebody with such a passion for nature, and so genuinely eager (even off camera) to find out about the work we've been doing for Butterfly Conservation in our area. We are really lucky to have a place of such natural beauty right on our doorstep. I'm glad you could share it with us. As well you know it is hard to make people aware of the importance of preserving and caring for these special places. Hope you and your colleagues can now tell the difference between these beautiful butterflies on the wing! Take care.

Hi Iolo, While I was walking my lab this evening through the fields [about 9pm, dusk] I thought I'd try your trick for spotting barn owls. I 'kissed'! the air for 10 minutes or so with no luck. I shall keep trying, did get dive bombed by swallows though!! Thanks for being such a brilliant inspiration.

Dear Iolo, After watching the first episode of 'not in my nature', I felt moved and embarrassed enough to contact you. Im a big fan and have wanted to get in touch for a while, respecting and admiring your warm, pure, natural, informal and passionate energy. The cringe factor was a little unbearable for me, watching some of the guests on this show, it was obvious to me that your body language showed the same, you did all you could do and just got on with it. I just wanted to say that sadly, people like that may well be the majority of the population (preferring to sit in watching big brother and top 50 celeb bad hair dayz), but there are still plenty of us who connect with message of the natural world, and the joy and well being it offers, and your infectious delivery combined with this beautiful peninsula simply adds to it.

Pupils at Ysgol-y-Berwyn, Y Bala
We are trying to develop a project to get young people interested and involved with animals and wildlife. We have a pair of robins and blue tits nesting in our school garden, but our pond is lifeless. We have a great selection of animals in our science lab - corn snake, tree frog, hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. On 12th of July we are holding an open morning to invite the public to come to school to see our work. We would be so honoured if Iolo could come over to visit us. All are welcome.
Rydym yn awydus iawn i ddatblygu prosiect yn ymwneud a byd natur yn yr ysgol. Mae ganddom adar yn nythu yn ardd yr ysgol ( robin goch a titw tomos las). Mae pwll dwr yn yr ardd hefyd ond mae'n llawn algau. Ar yr 12fed o Orffennaf rydym yn agor yr ysgol i'r cyhoedd er mwyn iddynt cael gweld ein anifeiliaid anwes ( corn snake, tree frog, cwningod, llygod mawr a nifer mwy). Buasem yn hynod o ddiolchgar os y buasech yn medru dod draw am dro i'n cynorthwyo gyda'n menter o ddysgu sut i gofalu am anifeiliaid o'n cwmpas. Diolch.

In celebration of our 125th Anniversary of our school, we are holding our very first Village Show on 29th June 2008. We would be honoured if Iolo could come along and judge our competitions. We are a small village community who would love to show how strong our community spirit has become over the past few years and we'd like to share this with a wider community.

I met Iolo at a Gwent Wildlife Trust event at Y Senedd - we had recently opened the Usk green burial ground, and were delighted that Iolo was in support of what we do. We are about to open our next green burial ground, just to the west of Culverhouse Cross on the border between Cardiff and The Vale... It is an exceptionally beautiful place with scenic views across Cardiff (with glimpses of the Millenium Stadium between the trees), St Fagans, and beyond to Castell Coch and the Garth Mountain. We would love Iolo to officially open the burial ground if there is an opportunity for him to do so...

I am Iolo's former Geography teacher at Llanfyllin HS and on behalf of our local Welsh Community Paper 'Yr Ysgub' I would like to invite Iolo to send us an occasional article for publication in our our 'Rura; Scene' (Cefn Gwlad) page. The present series on the Nature of Wales is excellent and very much enjoyed by our family.

Claire Harris, Evanstown Voluntary organisation
I am writing on behalf of Evanstown voluntary organisation. This group is a motivated and enthusastic organisation who want to improve their area, and include their community in the wonderful area we live in. They are very positive, and are willing to try anything to get the communtiy enthusastic and proud of their valley. Their caption is "Not how green is our valley, but how CLEAN is our valley." They are organising a consulation day to try and recruit volunteers to take part in environmental activities, they have put on these events in the past but with little response. They understand that they need a catch to attract people to the consultation event, which is where Iolo maybe able to help, by attending the event. They can advertise the appearance, and therefore the community will attend, take part in the actvities, and EVO can move forward with their activities. EVO are keen and work with other agencies such as: Mentro Allan Bridgend Wildlife TrustKeep Wales Tidy Sustainable Wales BAVO Community First. Thank you for taking time to read this comment, and I look forward to your response :-)

It's been a long time since N.E.L.P and it's great to see how well Iolo's done at doing something he really loves.I now work at the Bracken Trust which supports people with cancer in the mid-powys area and it would be great if Iolo could come to Llandrindod Wells to do a talk/fund raiser. It would also be great to catch up on any news from old friends from N.E.L.P.

Iolo, I need to know where you got the top from that you were wearing on the big welsh challenge programme. It said Wales and 76 (the year i was born!). I need to get one like it, help me to find one!

Flying with Kites - As with all his programmes it was wonderful. Iolo's enthusiasm and enjoyment is infectious and I found myself involved to the point of actually feeling his humility and awe when handling the eagle, his apprehension on takeoff and his joy when the Kites finally flew alongside the canopy. Keep up the good work Iolo.
Thu Mar 2 12:44:29 2006

Kate from Lake Crafnant
I agree with Philip Glynn of Newtown - Iolo is a real STAR!! First time I met him was at Lake Crafnant Snowdonia National Park in March this year when he was presenting a program with guest Gaynor Davies for Telesgop for S4C called 'CRWYDRO'- It had to be abandoned because of bad weather but they returned in August to start filming so had the pleasure again of meeting them along with producer Gerralt Pennant and camera crew - fantastic people!! I have really enjoyed the series Iolo's Welsh Safari and Iolo's Canals of Wales. Every one has to be quiet when Iolo's on TV!! Maybe BBC Wales can come to Crafnant and make a program - there is lots of wild life there and it would be good to meet Lynfa & Cheryl - they look really good fun - it's nice to see them involved - they make a great team! wondering what next series will be?!! Look forward to it.....

Dave Roberts, Llangollen
Delightfully informal approach, and stunning views of Pontcysyllte aqueduct (Iolo's Canals of Wales series on BBC Two Wales). Too bad we didn't see the glorious scenery of the upper reaches of the canal, or the dark, spooky Chirk tunnel, but much respect to Lynfa for her heroic run with heavy camera from Abbey Road to Tower Bridge, and to Cheryl, handling her baptism of fire at Fron drawbridge with such good humour. While I thought the editing could have been more chronological, and found the music somewhat intrusive, this was infinitely better than the Holiday programme's Ford-fawning fiasco of a feature on the Llangollen canal.
Thu Oct 6 00:11:02 2005

Philip Glynn, Newtown
Iolo used to live next door to Jacky and myself. He is a real star, I meet him regularly in Newtown and we always have a chat. These programmes are such a delight and give ex Brummies like us a real feel for the Welsh countryside. Long may he continue to delight his audience.
