School:
Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig

Between the ages of 12 - 15, Aled won first prize in the Urdd National Eisteddfod in the disco dancing section for his Michael Jackson impression!
Biography:
Born and bred in Aberystwyth, Aled Haydn Jones made his name as "BB Aled" - one of Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles' team, broadcasting live to millions of listeners across the UK.

Aled was born in Aberystwyth during the hot summer of 1976. His family owned one of the town's most popular cafes - Caffi Morgan - and he lived with his parents above the premises.

A fluent Welsh-speaker, Aled went to Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth (a Welsh-language primary school) before going on to the town's Welsh-medium secondary school, Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig.

On Saturdays and during the school holidays, he'd work at his parents café. He toyed with the idea of becoming a bus driver but his dream was to be a Phillip Schofield, one of CBBC's main presenters during the 1980s.

After leaving school in 1992, Aled signed up for a course in Computer Programming at the local Further Education College, Coleg Ceredigion. It wasn't long before he realised IT was not for him and he left to do a BTEC qualification in Media Studies at Swansea College.

His big break came in the late 1990s, in the dying days of the Radio 1 Roadshow which had seen top DJs broadcasting live from Britain's seaside resorts every summer since 1973. The last Roadshow was held in 1999, shortly after Aled joined Radio 1 as part of the behind-the-scenes production team.

The demise of the traditional Roadshow gave birth to the 'One Big Sunday' - a free open-air concert complete with chart-topping bands, which Radio 1 hosts every Sunday during the summer at different towns across the UK. As the 'One Big Sunday' toured the country, Aled often found himself working with Chris Moyles.

A brand new tv show had just started which would turn out to be the big unexpected hit of the summer of 2000 - Channel 4's 'Big Brother'. It was Aled who got Chris Moyles hooked on the show.

When the second series of 'Big Brother' started in 2001, Aled was then working as a Broadcast Assistant on the Dave Pearce show. Chris Moyles invited him on to his afternoon show to do a one-off review of the first programme. He ended up staying for the whole 'Big Brother' series, following every twist and turn of the house and its housemates. He became known as 'BB Aled' and the name has stuck.

When series 3 of 'Big Brother' hit the screens in 2002, BB Aled was back and taking up his place once more in the Chris Moyles studio.

He returned to the microphone again in autumn 2002. This time, he was given the prefix 'FA' as the resident expert giving the inside track to Moyles' listeners on the BBC's new pop talent tv show 'Fame Academy'.

When one of Chris' team - Lizzie - left the afternoon show, Aled was asked to take her place and became a permanent fixture on Radio 1 between 3.00pm and 5.45pm every weekday.

In March 2003, Aled's parents retired from Caffi Morgan - and the whole Radio 1 audience got to know about it at the couple were interviewed live on the Chris Moyles programme.

The Chris Moyles Show team at One Big Weekend in Maidstone in May 2008Aled has since had to get used to early-morning alarm calls. When Chris Moyles took over from mum-to-be Sara Cox on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in January 2004, Aled went with him and he now produces alongside his fellow Jones, Rachel. In May 2008 the team wallked away with Gold for the Breakfast Show at the Sony's.

Other highlights of Aled's career so far have included meeting some of the world's top pop celebs - like Madonna, Kylie and Robbie Williams. As well as Radio 1, Aled has also been making appearances on a number of television and radio programmes in Wales, including Radio Cymru's C2 show on Monday and Thursday nights.

In what he described as a "slightly embarrassing" title, Aled was named as the 2004 Male Rear of the Year - for the full story, go to the BBC News Archive.
