Morfa Bychan

Morfa Bychan Morfa Bychan is a long storm beach, popular with tourists as a result of the large caravan park which is located alongside.

A rocky beach with some sandy patches, this little bay works best on the pushing tide and is capable of holding big swells when the winds are favourable.

It has various peaks but the best is a nice right hand peak towards the middle of the beach. Popular with bodyboarders.

Morfa Bychan beach is reached along a narrow road leading from the village of Llanrhystud on the main A487 between Aberaeron and Aberystwyth.

Access to this beach is severly restricted due to the caravan park here being private property so anyone visiting the beach should seek permission first, before parking up! The only other alternative is a very long walk across the beach from Aberystwyth.

I've been a resident on the adjacent site Pengarreg for over 16 years. My daughter loves it there and on a good day the waves are brilliant and the owners don't mind who parks there as long as you've parked in orderly fashion. My advice is visit Pengarreg compared to Morfa and make your own mind up.

It's my second home my uncle lives there and my nan has a caravan there. I'm in the biggest group down there. My 4 uncles were in the biggest group when they were little and so was my mom. Its the best in the world and there is LOADS of excitment. When I'm older me and my mates r goin to live down there as a family...

Well I've been on the beach when the waves have been quite high, could definitely surf here but rarely, and like someone said it is a deathwish once you are over your waist in the water, you can almost feel the current dragging you. You also get a very strong current dragging you to the estuary, amazing beach though for a party!

Morfa Bychan beach is pointless, my family have been going to the caravan site for about 25 years and there is nothing there other than a possible broken leg when u slip on the rocks, New Quay beach however is clean, sandy and beautiful. Or try the beach at Cai Bach camp site just out side New Quay.

I'm not a big fan of all this competition for waves!! Why can't we all get along and give lodz of hugs and kisses.

The beach is great for exploring the rock pools and rock formation and a driftwood collectors dream. As for swimming and surfing you would have to have a deathwish.

Agree with swansea Jack on this one, The only time i have ever surfed it was many moons ago when 'Hurricane Dannielle' brought us some lovely swell, decided to head down the coast as the swell size was quite hefty and ended up surfing morfa, Big waves but very very lame, perfect for longboarding-think thats why baxter lives there....;P

I hope that seal story is a joke. There are lots of seals there. I used to surf that place years ago. The Lefts up north seemed to be the best. Long and sometimes walled up. I now live in Oregon in the US and if I see a seal I'm relieved but hoping something bigger isn't following it.

Awful spot, don't know any serious bodyboarders who surf here. A nearby spot is much better.

Indeed Amos, I understand this nearly happened at another local unmentionable spot. Probably my scariest moment in the water happened here, at Morfa. There were several of us out and the sets were well spaced so we were all chatting away. I was facing the shore and the guy I was talking to was facing out to sea. Something caught his attention behind me, his face crumpled and lips shook as the fear took hold of him. (I'd never seen a face turn from smile to horror before) I imagined a huge wave closing fast and turned to see a deep splosh in the water behind me about ten feet away and a large light shape moving down through the water at speed. I turned back with the same look of horror I'd just seen, "What was it?" "I DON'T KNOW" he screamed as he paddled for the shore, a hopeless 400ft away. I nearly lost weight immediately. I could only imagine my biggest fear, eaten alive! Moments later IT, thankfully, showed itself, an enormous grey seal with a 3ft wide neck. A reassurance to some extent, but, the year before I'd seen Towyn beach at Newquay cleared of surfers by one baby seal a quarter of its size. I gladly took the next wave in...

Last time I surfed here the waves were terrible. Backing off slopey nightmare. Hideous paddle out through loads of rocks and boulders. Miles from where I parked my car and then dinged my board on the way in. Try Borth.

Could someone give me some directions by any chance is it best to go to Aber and then head down the coast?
Wed Jun 9 15:08:18 2004

Oli Aber Man!!!
I agree. DLJ (Dennis Lloyd Jones) ain't too happy about people using his site as a car park. Understandable I suppose...But it's simple enough to walk across when the tide is out. Watch out for when it comes in though or you could be in serious trouble!
Sat Mar 20 23:50:25 2004

Amos
Caravan site owner is NOT too happy about people parking up on his site who aren't using the caravan site. Any disrespectful attitudes could result in access being totally denied!!
