It was nice to get away from LA for a month to visit Aber again recently. Spent many an hour walking the Prom reliving my childhood memories, but how things have changed. When I was growing up there during the 60's, the Prom used to be packed with holidaymakers, but now it was desolate. Maybe the current economic climate has something to do with it. All in all, I enjoyed seeing my family and a few close friends, but it was nice to come back to some real sunshine!

I take Jimmy Coles' excellent point, and it would be great to have yet more - and unspoiled - views of Aber, but I have to say, I like the view from among the chimney pots, too! It's a bit like being a student, looking down from lodgings! Absolutely let's have more, but let's keep this one too!!!

The webcam vistas are spectacular, but many will agree I'm sure that breathtaking views are being spoiled by the high positioning of the cam amongst the sooty chimney pots, seagulls and occasional steeplejack sightings. I'm not complaining but Aber has got scenery and lots of it, so please could we find a lower level view, there are so many possibilities, I hope property owners will cooperate by allowing access for cam fixings...with thanks to them also..

Great for checking out the weather before coming into town. It can be miserable here just 12 miles inland, but glorious in Aber. So, so useful.

Having left Aber 9 months ago for a new life in Canada it's nice to take a quick peek at the seafront! Hopefully I'll be walking along the prom again during our trip home in December.

It's refreshed every minute! I know cos occasionally, when life is really dull here in Scotland, it's fun to save the images one after another and then run them as a slideshow, to get a time-lapse sequence of the clouds coming in from the Irish Sea! Mesmeric!!! (Hope it's OK to do that...) Believe me, it's an underestimated tribute to a place to have a webcam that works as well as this one!

Yay, you cleaned it! Now people can see Aber in all its (non grubby) glory. Great for checking what the sea is doing before heading out to kayak, surf, swim or whatever.

Brilliant - I was born in the maternity unit - which used to be located on the prom in 1956 - so this would have been one of my first views of the world !

Always pop in to check how the old place is looking. Be good if the webcam on the Prom could have a bit of a clean, though. The weather always looks a bit murky through that one.

Looking at the latest webcam.. full of gloomy clouds and rain I asked myself what I miss about the place. Aber is just so much more than meets the eye, having graduated in 97 i still think of the place very fondly. It was a wonderful place to come of age and remains in my heart to this day. The weather I will never miss, but the times i had there were priceless. I hope the next generation has as good a time as I did.

I miss Aber! I left over two and a half years ago now, after 3 wonderful years at uni there, and still come and check the webcams every now and then for a quick dose of Aber-ness. Am going to return there in two weeks with my boyfriend (another exile of aber), to catch up with uni mates, kick the Bar, eat Arts Center cakes, see AberJazz (hope they're still around?!) and generally feel like we've come home.

Oh Ellen, I weep for you. I know so many ex-pats who feel like you. The only happy ones are those who have finally returned, usually in the twilight of their years full of regre. Travelling only brings sorrow at lost time with nearest and dearest. The trauma of moving back home is never to be underestimated. I am always left with the feeling its better never to go in the first place....If my mum still lived in Christchurch what a different life I would have.....

I miss Aber so much!!! I went to Plascrug Primary school and then Penglais Secondary school and then off to nursery nursing college in Ammanford. I miss it so much, I've gone back three times over the last 17 years, I'm a nanny over here and loving it. I lived in the flats called Plasmorolwg overlooking the harbour. The winters were the best watching the crazy waves crashing over the jetti. The summers were great too going down to the beach with my radio every sunday with my mates listening to the top 40 countdown. We used to swim in the river or in the salt water beach at Tanabwlch, I'm not sure if I have the spelling right. In the summer we would walk over to Clarach and get all the cheap stuff at the market. When I think of my childhood home I think of Aberystwth, hanging out with Natalie, Shelley, Nerys, Stuart, Paul and all the other people. Now I'm 35, very single and feeling somewhat nostaligic. I want to go back....good times....good times.xxx

We are a family of surfers from Australia coming to Wales to surf and trace our family history. We are planning to come late June into July. Is this a good time of year for waves? What is the water temperature? What are the air temperature and weather conditions? Where is a good central location to stay by the sea with high quality accommodation and ammenities for Father and son surfers, wife non surfer and Grandparents non surfers? We appreciate any feedback ThanksGeorge

Angela, Chepstow,
Oh Tim. I pity your poor wife. Denying her a sneaky romantic gesture because of your fear of being watched. Does it not bother you, the hundreds of students, residents and tourist that live on the seafront, and can just look out of the window at you. Then again, perhaps you should consider the above people and spare them your romantic gestures and save them for somewhere more appropriate.Me, I would happily snog my husband on the promenade, as it would invoke many happy memories of my years in Aberystwyth.Lighten up Tim, I'm sure many people would not give you a second glance.

Isn't it terrible when public spaces lose the potential for offering the fleeting private moment... I'll never again look to sneak a romantic moment with my wife on one of our walks along the promenade -- not with the knowledge that cameras are watching. such a lovely spot in the world... stripped of its romance by big brother. a crying shame.

Just before leaving work over here, I try to remember to check what the morning is like back in Aber via the webcam and an 8 hour time difference. Nice to know that every time the image changes maybe it's Mum or Dad driving along the Prom in the distance. Mongolia is landlocked and the sea is one of the things you start to miss (along with constant water pressure and civilised roads...). Will be back there in Jan to see the real thing again.
Hey Chris in China - Not in Beijing are you, if so fancy a nostalgic beer sometime? Will be passing through in early Jan and mid Feb.

At the moment we are visited by our friends from Penrhiwnewydd, Penrhyncoch, Aber. Last year we were hosted by our friends and we loved Aber, the University, its library, the beaches, constitution hill, also Rummers bar, half way inn, the atmosphere, the climate and the people over there. My family and I hope to be back soon. It is nearly the most beautiful place in the world with an excellent climate, although our friends always tell us it is raining. The webcams show they are exaggerating.

Bill from Mold: yes, students still kick the bar! I graduated in 1997 and looking at the web cam really brings back such wonderful memories: drunken, melancholic strolls along the beach on balmy summer nights, hectic storms in the winter and an enduring charm - charm in the people, the unspoilt architecture, the unpredicatable water quality in the sea (either crystal clear or bright green) - all in all a stunningly charming place. Can't wait to retire there in thirty years!
