Miles Orchard

Founder of Cricket Website

Getting started:
I love cricket, and I was surfing the web and
realised there was no site
or information about Bodyline and the history of The Ashes. I decided to teach myself basic web authoring, got a book and taught myself enough in 2 weeks to put basic pages together. 334notout.com started with 10 pages; in a year, there were 1300! I decided to develop what I’d want to read and see when I went looking for information. People sent me letters, stories and reminiscences of particular cricketing events and so it grew.

Why cricket:
I’ve always been interested in sport, and after school, I lived in Australia for some time, where I played regularly and watched lots of cricket. I’ve always had a fascination for Australia. The people have a very positive attitude ... and the weather means lots of cricket!

Highlights:
Getting an invite to spend time with the family of the late Harold Larwood. After they saw the website, the family wrote to thank me for my profile on Harold and invited me to visit them in Australia. Also, meeting the publisher of the greatest cricketer of all time, Don Bradman. Becoming good friends with him is very special.

Low:
Spending hours in the evenings inputting data onto the site and wondering whether to continue!

Ultimate goal:
My ultimate goal would have been to have interviewed Don Bradman himself. I was so close but never made getting the interview. If only I had started the website 5 years earlier!

Tips and advice:
Anything is possible! If you have an idea, go for it and stick in there! Decide on a topic close to your heart as it makes the long hours easier! Read and do your research. Talk to as many people as possible.
