Writer,
astrologer, broadcaster
Career:
I left school at 16 to work as a labourer on
a building site. A signwriter at work, who was
also a lecturer in Art, saw my drawings and
gave me a place at Cardiff College of Art. I
got in on talent with no qualifications. After
my degree,I went on the dole and then worked
as a draughtsman designing sewers and was sent
to Libya and Northern Ireland. A dangerous job
since a theodolite can look like a gun, so I
backed out of going to El Salvador! When I returned
home, I worked in a dubious nightclub ‘The Pits’
and the dole beckoned once again. I returned
to reading tarot cards and began making more
money than I’d ever made. I did birth charts
and astrology and was asked to write a horoscope
column. From this, I was asked to join BBC Wales
on the Roy Noble radio show. I’ve had 87 books
published with a world sale of 5 million. I
have 2 books coming soon on colour and vampires…
The
job:
I write 1000 words every day. The hardest thing
about writing is the application of the bottom
to the chair. I don’t have set hours but I am
disciplined in writing every day. I also have
to prepare for broadcasting by consulting Raphael’s
Ephemeris to see the planetary positions for
each day. As an astrologer, I then put all of
this into prose. I enjoy writing, broadcasting
and the art work. There is never a case of giving
one up for the other.
Highlight:
The highlight for me is always the next one…!
Reading the blurb on the back of the book is
always special - it doesn’t seem to be me!
Low:
In 1993, when the publishing and media worlds
gave me little income for 18 months!
Favourite
broadcasting moment:
Being half way up Cader Idris, while carrying
a tripod, with an eye infection where a fly
had flown in a quarter of the way up…my mobile
phone went and it was my publisher in London
wanting to clarify a few points about chapter
4…..
Tips from the top:
So you think you’re talented, and so you are
- there are plenty of talented people so you
have to have determination and self-discipline…and
luck! Luck won’t find you unless you do have
talent, self-discipline and determination.
