Richard Herold

Student with visual impairment

Age: 21

College or University:
I came from Hereford College for the Blind to Pontypridd College. I’m studying RSA Word and Text Processing, RSA Spelling Skills, AEB Achievement Tests in Literacy and Numeracy and IT.

My aim, ideally, is to work in radio broadcasting. Having talked to my social worker, I’m considering office work within a radio environment.

The course:
I’ve been here for two years, and will be here for a further year. I started doing a Creative Arts course in Hereford, but the course I’m on now has opened up options for me. I’m now studying Modern Office Technology, and a course from the School of Vocational Access, a sensory course for students with a visual impairment.

The best thing:
I really enjoy IT, and I really enjoy the fact that I can do creative writing. We have very good teachers here who give you a lot of choice. What’s very important is that this course gives you time to do things. You’re not rushed.

The worst thing:
I don’t mind getting up in the morning.. and that’s what generally people think is the worst!

Useful info:
Give it your best, and don’t worry about anything. Also, remember you’ve got to do the slog to get the good things as well. Accept all new challenges positively, and don’t worry about doing it all straight away.
