Football Manager
Career:
I signed as a schoolboy for Manchester United
at 14, and as
a professional for them at 17. I’ve played for
Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Southampton,
Everton and Blackburn.
Inspiration:
I’ve always enjoyed football. I had lots of
encouragement from my family and my schoolteachers,
and I had a little luck on the way, which always
helps.
Career
introduction:
I was given a football for the first time at
the age of 4 or 5! I’ve always had a football.
Big
break:
When I went for my trial at Manchester United
at the age of 14. I did well and they asked
me to sign.
Highlight:
Winning trophies is always a highlight, and
I’ve had a good deal of success in that, and
of course, the debut for your country is very
important. I won the first of my 72 caps for
Wales back in 1984, when I scored the winner
against England - we were playing them in Wrexham,
my home town, of all places!
Another
highlight was being awarded the MBE for services
to football in 1998. Also, I took over as the
manager of Wales during the 99/00 Season.
Low:
I haven’t really had one, ever, because I’ve
always played football.
Tips:
Work hard, and listen to people who know better
than you. Be
dedicated, prepare well and train properly.
