Animal Hosptial - Trivia about Rolf

1. Antipodean man, we salute you!
Artist, Musician, Writer, Novelist, Entertainer and Presenter Rolf Harris (MBE & OBE) was born in Bassendean, Western Australia in 1930.

2. The man’s a Welshman at heart!
It appears that Rolf got some of his artistic genes from his grandfather, George Harris, a Welsh artist who raised the money to move his family out to Australia in 1920 by selling three paintings!

3. Give him a shirt!
As Rolf’s dad was also born and brought up in Wales, Rolf qualifies to pull on the old red jersey!

4. Get on the stage
Rolf’s big break came at the age of 18 when he won an ‘Amateur Hour’ radio competition. He originally came to London in 1952 to study art, and first worked for BBC children’s radio as long ago as 1954.

5. Rolf plays pop!
As a musician, Rolf’s had massive hits with songs such as ‘Two Little Boys’, ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport’, ‘Jake The Peg’, ‘Sun Arise’, and ‘Stairway To Heaven’.

6. Well blow me!
Rolf has single-handedly popularised two unusual instruments: the didgeridoo and the stylophone. Whilst the didgeridoo is a native Aboriginal instrument, the stylophone was a bizarre little electronic mini-organ type thing which you played with a pen! See Links for website address if you don’t believe us!

7. Stylophone hits
Despite the fact that production of the stylophone ended in 1980, they are hugely collectable, and are still used by popular beat combos even these days: Pulp, Moloko, Belle & Sebastian, Orbital, and pop granddad David Bowie have all used one on their records.

8. Immortal rolf utterings
‘G’day’, ‘Can you tell what it is yet?’, ‘What d’yer think her chances are, Wendy?’

9. Online dedication
As well as having his own fan club, Rolf has his own website – Rolf Harris – The Wizard of Oz – it’s chocka with Rolf facts, pictures, and paintings, as well as the lyrics to all of his greatest hits (see Links for website address).
