Time Out

Y? - Must Have

What you’ll need to get started with a hobby

1. Passion
Think long and hard before diving into a hobby. A hobby should really reflect the interests and passions that aren’t a part of your everyday life, but which you would like to explore. This might mean naked bungee jumping, or knitting tea-pot cosies: whatever grabs your bag.

2. Money
It might be anything from a few pounds to a few hundred thousand pounds, but all hobbies cost something. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t make money out of your hobbies (See X is for X Marks The Spot).

3. Time
Hobbies can be very time consuming, so make sure you’re prepared to devout the required amount of hours, days, week, and years necessary.

4. Responsibility
Some hobbies are far more demanding than others: not only in terms of time and money, but also in terms of risk. Make sure that anything you plan to undertake is a) legal, b) done under the guidance of experts, and c) done with the express knowledge and permission of your parents or guardians.

5. Devotion
Remember, a hobby is for life, and not just for Xmas.
