1.
Race you to the village pond and back
Point-to-Point racing originated during the 19th Century when the
landed gentry would settle arguments over whose horse was faster
than the other by racing between ‘points’ on the landscape.
2.
Big on the crowd front
The 200-plus point-to-point meetings held each year attract well
in excess of 700,000 people – though not all of them at once, you
understand.
3.
Half a calendar
Point-to-point racing only takes place between the months of January
and June.
4.
Giz a job!
According to the British Horse Racing Board, ‘there are approximately
15,000 people looking after 40,000 horses in racing stables and
Thoroughbred studs throughout the country'. See Links
for their website address for more details on careers in racing.
5.
Small but perfectly formed
According to online resource site Jockey Room, the ideal weight
for a jockey is 52.5kgs for flat racing, and 62kgs for jump racing.
See Links for their website
address for more facts and info on Jockeys worldwide.
6.
Up, down, all around
Jockey Room also reckon that at the height of the racing session,
a top professional jockey such as Frankie Dettori can ride at
up to three different race meetings a day. As for rest, forget
it – you won’t get to bed before 11pm, and it’s up and out again
by 5am!
7.
Top lady!
Pip Jones, David Braces’ leading jockey, is the current Ladies
Champion in point-to-point.
