1.
Rhyl unmasked
In September 2000, the Apollo Cinema in Rhyl was picked to host
the UK premiere of Jim Carrey’s ‘Me, Myself & Irene’. Such auspicious
openings are usually the province of swanky West End cinemas in
London. So why Rhyl? Well, the Vice President of Twentieth Century
Fox, Paul Higginson, used to play for Rhyl Town FC, and when the
cash-strapped club asked him if he could help them raise a bit
of dosh, he obliged in the best way he knew how.
2.
Reel rosettes
The British Federation of Film Societies run an annual awards
ceremony for its membership. The hotly contested categories up
for grabs include Best School Society/Best Student Society, Best
New Society and Film Society of the Year.
3.
A film in a cinema about films in a cinema
The fantastic ‘Cinema Paradiso’ is a film about a young boy’s obsession
with his local cinema as he grows up in rural Italy after World
War II. After the projectionist shows him the ropes, he goes on
to become a projectionist himself, before….watch it and see! It’s
fantastic, and it’ll probably make you cry.
4.
Sunday non-service
It wasn’t until after World War II that commercial cinemas in
the UK were able to open on Sundays.
5.
Old McDonald had a cinemeccanicaaa Victoria 5 35mm projector
Lamphrey-based cattle farmer Huw Bleddyn Puw ran his own cinema
in an annexe next to his milking shed from 1957 until 1991. Locals
would gather every first Friday of the month to watch his home-made
films depicting local life and life on his farm. He finally closed
down when the cows kept complaining that the films he showed were
just a load of old bull.
