Time Out

Axes & Broadswords - Get Started

So you wanna dress up in leathers and hit people with a rubber sword?

What’s it all about?
It’s about empathising with people from the past by dressing up in costumes and acting out a fantasy scenario over the course of a couple of days, carrying out heroic deeds, being killed, triumphantly taking over the land, or whatever…

These people should go get a life
They have one - a life which spans both past and present. Devon-based company, Dumnonni Chronicles, organises courses over a long weekend, charging people to take part in a historical ‘adventure’.

Fact or fiction?
Dumnonni Chronicles’ adventures are set in a semi-mythical part of southern Albion (or England) called Dumnonni, 200BC – 900AD, where there’s an ongoing war between the peace-loving people of Dumnonni, and the ravaging hordes of Fomorian. This involves fighting off baddies without being killed yourself.

Like paintball?
No, not at all – it’s an incredibly complex and convoluted thing, this Live Role Playing malarkey. You’ll need to develop a character, learn the rule systems and use all your acting and improvising skills.

Related hobbies
Through historical re-enactment groups, you can become a Viking, a Roman, a Celt, a civil-war soldier, or whatever else you like, for a day.
