Work experience

Work experience placements are available in virtually every area of the BBC across Wales.

Wales Today


About the Department

The Wales Today team is made up of reporters, producers and directors, based in the biggest newsroom outside London. We are responsible for bringing you the latest news making the headlines in Wales. There are a number of TV bulletins throughout the day but our main programme is on air at six thirty every night on BBC 1 Wales. Most of the team are based in the Cardiff newsroom but we have reporters in our newsrooms throughout the country.

About the placement

A placement with Wales Today can include the following :

  • Being assigned to work alongside a reporter who's working on a story to be broadcast on the day
  • Working with the team and being involved in meetings to decide the day's agenda i.e. what stories we run that day
  • Being involved with the editing, cutting stories from footage shot that day and watching the piece come together
  • Experiencing the gallery and watching the live programmes go on air from studio
  • Understanding our constant pressure to hit deadlines and to respond to breaking stories

Criteria

Age : due to Health & Safety considerations, you will need to be aged 18 or over to apply for this placement.

We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate a clear interest in journalism and broadcasting. You should have a broad knowledge of Wales and Welsh issues, as well as good communication skills. You should also be able to work under pressure. You need to be highly motivated, work well in a team and be keen to learn. By spending the day at Wales Today, you'll be joining a very busy team and you'll need to be willing to fit in and show initiative in a pressured environment.
