Work experience

Work experience placements are available in virtually every area of the BBC across Wales.

National Orchestra of Wales

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales is offering an opportunity to gain an insight into Orchestral Management.

About the Orchestra

The BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales is one of the 6 BBC Performing Groups across Britain.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales is orchestra-in-residence at St David's Hall, Cardiff, and it also presents a concert series at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea. The orchestra tours throughout Wales and internationally. The orchestra also appears in the Proms each year at the Royal Albert Hall.

Concerts are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Cymru, Wales radio and television, and BBC Four. The orchestra has recorded a diverse range of works for CD and soundtracks for television including Doctor Who.

Additionally, the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales have an Education and Outreach department that organises concerts, projects and workshops across Wales.

About the Placement

The orchestra is supported by a small orchestral management team where the general placement is predominantly based. A typical placement lasts during a week during which we aim to offer opportunities to spend time in the Marketing, Box Office, Education and Library Departments. In addition we aim to organise placements in weeks when there will be an opportunity to sit in on orchestral rehearsal or recording sessions if possible.

In addition we have an existing relationship with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Arts Management Masters Course and try to offer longer placements (typically of a month) for a student on this course each year.

Criteria

In addition to good interpersonal & communication skills and adaptability, applicants should have a strong interest in music - especially orchestral music.

Applicants should be studying music at GCSE, AS, A Level or Degree Level (or equivalent) and/or currently involved in music in some way. Perhaps you are learning to play a musical instrument or involved in a local amateur youth orchestral or ensemble.

Anybody applying should be aware that the placement is primarily for people interested in finding out about all aspects orchestral management and is predominately office based.
