Newsgathering
About the DepartmentThe Newsgathering unit is at the hub of all things produced in the News Department, providing up-to-date stories and support for Wales Today, Radio Wales, Newyddion, Radio Cymru, the Political Unit and News Online services. From before-dawn to after-dark, members of the team regularly check with the emergency services for breaking stories, deal with news agencies, handle e-mails and other correspondence, and provide a daily prospects list of events for programmes. It also manages specialist correspondents in fields such as business, education, and health, as well as a number of patch reporters living outside Cardiff. It also manages the cameramen working for the department. About the placementA placement in Newsgathering can include the following : - Being assigned to work alongside the team on the Newsgathering desk in Cardiff
- Experiencing the busy pace of a day in News, and the various programmes which are produced
- Learning the skills of gathering news, and writing clear and concise copy for news bulletins
- Going out with cameramen and reporters - and then writing and editing your own version of the story
- Understanding the constant pressure to hit deadlines and to respond to breaking stories
CriteriaWe want someone who has a passion for the delivery of news, who can work fast and accurately under pressure. You'll need to have good communication skills, and a broad knowledge of Wales and Welsh issues. It's the engine room, not the captain's cabin.
