History of the BBC in Wales

Alun Williams c. 1953

The BBC has been a trusted broadcaster in the Principality for over 85 years

Wales was quick to follow the formation of the British Broadcasting Company, as the BBC was originally called when it was formed in October 1922.

From humble beginnings in 1923, the BBC in Wales ushered in a new 'Ministry of Happiness'. Expanding rapidly, the staff were soon housed in larger premises at Park Place in Cardiff, and at new studios in Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth.

Since 1966 the purpose-built Broadcasting House at Llandaff has been the hub of BBC Wales' radio, TV and - in more recent years - online services.
