Broadcast opportunities

Microphone (green)

Note : the application process is currently closed and will re-open in the Spring of 2010

We would like to hear from any registered charity wanting to raise their profile and promote their cause on BBC Cymru Wales.

  • This is a FREE and VALUABLE service which offers a great awareness raising opportunity for voluntary sector organisations
  • You may also learn media skills which could help your organisation promote itself well beyond the BBC broadcast opportunity
  • Your charity will be supported throughout the process to ensure your organisation and the message you are portraying has the greatest impact possible

BBC Wales offers broadcasting opportunities for different charities each year where organisations may be offered either a radio or television broadcast or an online feature on BBC Wales' websites in both languages. Go to bbc.co.uk/wales and click on 'charities' (or bbc.co.uk/cymru and click on 'elusennau').

The broadcasts can highlight a particular campaign, issue or need that your organisation has - or simply inform those who have a need of your services where to go for help. They are allocated through a competitive application system and on the recommendation of the BBC Cymru Wales Charities Advisory Forum. See the charity broadcasts policy for details.

How to apply for a charity broadcast

Unfortunately the application process is now closed and will re-open in the Spring of 2010.

What will this opportunity mean for charities?

  • it tells the world at large that they exist and what they do
  • preparing for the broadcasts helps them to develop media skills that will aid them to become more effective in getting their message across in future
  • access to professional expertise
  • an opportunity to attract support

How will the BBC help?

We don't expect charities to have expertise in broadcasting. We are here to guide them through it. The Charities Co-ordinator will give advice and information and the programme producer will advise and support the charity through the broadcast aspects of the feature.

The BBC will also provide a specific telephone number for callers to respond to your feature. BBC Information Wales will be able to pass on the charity's contact address and telephone number for further information. Details of the broadcast will also be placed on Ceefax and here on bbc.co.uk/walescharities.

Broadcasting Opportunities and Good Practice

BBC Cymru Wales will follow the standards of practice of the Broadcast Appeals Charter to help each broadcast to be :

  • effective and productive in meeting their objectives
  • sensitive, in the way in which it conveys information about service users
  • open and accessible
  • accountable for its actions

We will work with the charities concerned as partners in the broadcast project, to :

  • clarify the aims of the feature
  • agree on copyright of programme and programme-related material
  • determine what facilities and services will be needed to support the broadcast - how, when and by what means they will be provided

Evaluation and feedback

The main intention of the broadcast opportunity is to raise the profile of your charity and its work.

You will be expected to complete an Evaluation and Feedback Form after the broadcast as we will want to know how successful your campaign has been to help future applicants.

There is an immediate response to some charity broadcasts but for other broadcasts responses occur over a longer period. For that reason BBC Cymru Wales will ask charities to record the response to their charity broadcast over time. We will ask after six weeks and again after six months for a report on that response.

These findings will help us to decide how to improve our services to charities and will be publicly available.
