'The Penyberth Three'

The Story of Welsh with Huw Edwards, broadcast 11 February 2003

In September 1936 founder of the Welsh National Party (later Plaid Cymru) Saunders Lewis, along with two fellow nationalists set fire to the RAF's bombing school at Penyberth on the Llyn Peninsula. By burning what they saw as a bastion of English dominance in Wales the trio ended up in a London prison, but returned heroes to many following their sentences.
