Details on the production behind High Hopes
Gareth Gwenlan (l) and Boyd Clack (r) on the set of High Hopes
High Hopes was filmed in studio and on location in South Wales.

Producer / Director: Gareth Gwenlan

Gareth Gwenlan is probably best known as the director behind the fantastically successful BBC series Only Fools And Horses. High Hopes is his first production as BBC Wales' Head of Comedy.

As Head of Comedy for BBC Television 1983-1990, Gareth Gwenlan commissioned a number of classic series in a golden age of British comedy including Yes Prime Minister, Bread, Blackadder, 'Allo 'Allo, One Foot In The Grave, Birds of a Feather and Keeping Up Appearances. During this time, the department won the Best Comedy at the BAFTA Awards every year and counted three Emmys among its other awards. As a producer/director, he has collected two Bafta awards and 12 nominations.

On High Hopes, he says: "In comedy terms, there's very little difference between High Hopes and Only Fools And Horses, except that Only Fools And Horses are 75 minute films so it's a different scale. But by and large, they're both comedies made in front of an audience - and the Welsh audience for High Hopes were just as enthusiastic as any Fools audience I've seen."

Writer - Boyd Clack

Boyd Clack is an actor and screenwriter, best known in Wales as star and co-writer of BBC Wales' comedy series Dez Rez, The Celluloid World Of Dezmond Reizillo and Bafta award-winning cult comedy Satellite City.

He has also acted on stage and screen in everything from one-man shows to Shakespeare, working with a huge range of talent including Stephen Berkoff, Robert Lepage and Toyah Wilcox.

His interests include international affairs, rugby, good conversation and Pink Floyd.
