Wyndham Colliery

Location:
Nantymoel, Ogmore Valley
Sunk:
1865
Closed:
1984

This colliery was sunk in 1865 by the Llynvi, Tondu and Ogmore Vale Iron and Coal Company. Following the company's bankruptcy in 1888 the Cory Brothers Limited took over and by 1913 employed 1,395 men producing steam coal. Post Nationalisation Wyndham was merged with the neighbouring Western Colliery and by 1971 employed 1,188 men producing 475,000 tons of coal making it the largest output in the South Wales Coalfield. The colliery was closed in January 1984.

"The collieries information contained within is based on a number of different sources listed at: Coalhouse Credits. Wherever possible, we've tried to cross-reference this material. However where it's not been possible to do so, we have used 'The South Wales Coalfield Directory Volumes 1-3' by Ray Lawrence (2005) as the primary source."
