Penrhiwceiber Colliery

Location:
Penrhiwceiber, Cynon Valley
Sunk:
1878
Closed:
1986

During the mid 1800s, the Cynon Valley had become the premier coal producing valley in the South Wales Coalfield, however as the Rhondda Valley emerged as the major coal producing region in the 1870s Cynon Valley's reserves were being saturated, so as the Penrikyber Colliery was sunk adverse geological conditions were met and it took six years before production was possible. Pay disputes dogged the 1940s at the colliery and industrial action reared its head again in the 1970s until the 1984 and 85 Miners' Strike signalled the end for Penrikyber as the pit only emerged from the conflict with 55% of expected output. British Coal closed the pit in 1986.

"The collieries information contained within is based on a number of different sources listed at: Coalhouse Credits. Wherever possible, we've tried to cross-reference this material. However where it's not been possible to do so, we have used 'The South Wales Coalfield Directory Volumes 1-3' by Ray Lawrence (2005) as the primary source."
