Maritime Colliery

Location:
Pontypridd, Taff Vale
Sunk:
circa 1841
Closed:
1961

Sunk in 1841 and serving the Taff Railway this colliery was lying idle by 1897. Following this the Great Western Colliery Company took control and in 1906 deepened the mine until in 1913 it was back to full production and employing 843 men. On Nataionalisation in 1947 the colliery employed 66 men on the surface and 348 men underground before the colliery was closed by the National Coal Board in June 1961.

"The collieries information contained within is based on a number of different sources listed at: Coalhouse Credits. Wherever possible, we've tried to cross-reference this material. However where it's not been possible to do so, we have used 'The South Wales Coalfield Directory Volumes 1-3' by Ray Lawrence (2005) as the primary source."
