Ffaldau Colliery

Location:
Pontycymmer, Gwar Valley
Sunk:
1878
Closed:
1985

Opened by the Ffaldau Steam Coal Company to produce house and steam coals. Ffaldau Colliery employed 580 men in 1913, which had increased to 250 men on the surface and 1,000 men underground in 1934. The National Coal Board merged the colliery with the neighbouring Gawr (Ocean) Colliery in April 1975 and the renamed Garw/Ffaldau Colliery was closed ten years later in 1985.

"The collieries information contained within is based on a number of different sources listed at: Coalhouse Credits. Wherever possible, we've tried to cross-reference this material. However where it's not been possible to do so, we have used 'The South Wales Coalfield Directory Volumes 1-3' by Ray Lawrence (2005) as the primary source."
