Dare Colliery

Location:
Near Treorchy, Rhondda Fawr Valley
Sunk:
1870
Closed:
1866

The sinking of Dare Colliery was completed in April 1870 to a depth of 219 yards and served the Taff Vale Railway employing 1,012 men by 1913. Dare suffered as a result of the widespread industrial problems of the 1930s and manpower dropped to 988 in 1935 before rising to 1,109 in 1947. Between June 1958 and June 1959 171 men left the pit and the colliery survived a further eight years before closing in February 1966.

"The collieries information contained within is based on a number of different sources listed at: Coalhouse Credits. Wherever possible, we've tried to cross-reference this material. However where it's not been possible to do so, we have used 'The South Wales Coalfield Directory Volumes 1-3' by Ray Lawrence (2005) as the primary source."
