The South and North pits at Caerau were sunk in 1883 at a depth of 340 yards with the third shaft sunk in 1909 with the house coal seams sunk at a depth of 172 yards. By 1935 the company employed 4,104 men, and under ownership of them Lord Rhondda help produce one million tons of coal alongside Coegnant, Maesteg, Deep and St John's. The maximum output for Caerau was 1,988 tons in 1913 and by 1961 manpower was 641 with an output of 122,244 tons. The closure of Caerau Colliery closure would come sixteen years later.
