Keeping up with the Griffithses

This lively Welsh-speaking familly seems up for a laugh. They're warm and spontaneous but may worry about the strangeness of their new environment, according to Philippa Davies, the psychologist.

Maria Mustard, a friend of the Griffithses, talks to Jamie and Louise

What do you think? Will humour carry this family through their 1927 experience?

Claire Wales from North Wales
We absolutely loved the programme, so much so that we went to visit Stack Square today and went into the Griffiths' house. Couldn't get over how small it actually is!! Roll on series 2...!!

Sue Wells from Pontypool
What a fabulous programm , well done to all the families for giving us some wonderful entertainment.

Griffiths Family
Watch out for Coalhouse 2 !X

Jess
Well what can I say about the Griffiths family. You and the Phillips were amazing. Gethin how are your pants? Now that was funny. Aahh and little Rhodri I don't like piggies - that was class.

the griffiths family.
We would like to wish you a very happy new year. We are really missing stack square at the moment but we don't think anyone from the families would like to stay in the cottages in this cold weather.

Debra Griffiths
Hi everyone. Well here we are at home now and still reading all of your comments. Thanks a lot. A message to Viv from Merthyr Tydfil - I think I must have met you when I worked in Tremle Kitchens in Cardigan. Hello to my mates Connor and Saskia and of course Pearl.

Brian Griffiths, Abersychan
What an absolute pleasure it was for me to be involved with Coal House and the families. I was lucky enough to get to photograph them for the BBC and it's great to see my pictures being used on this and other websites. I hope you had a good Christmas and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

Angharad Griffiths Ceredigion :):)
Ydych chi'n edrych ymlaen at yr xmas special? Roedden ni i lawr yn Stack Square diwrnod o'r blaen yn recordio. Roedd hi'n oer iawn yna ond roedden ni fel teulu wedi mwynhau mas draw! Are you looking forward to the xmas special? We were down in Stack Square the other day filming it. It was very cold but as a family we all enjoyed very much. I think the six parents were gutted when they had to try to relight the fires again! They thought they'd left that behind!

Angharad Griffiths Ceredigion
Mae'r plant i gyd yn colli'r moch a'r ieiro. Yn lwcus, rydyn ni'n mynd i gael Christmas special.
The children are all missing the pigs and the chickens. Luckily, we're going to have a Christmas special.

Angel
Are you, your family and friends glad to be back in 2007? I like the video clips especially the best bits. I liked was when rhodri said "i don't like piggies." And I like the bit when you were all there seeing which pig was Salt and which was Pepper for the butcher to kill so you could have meat for lunch and tea. My other best bit was when your mum and Annabel were singing. I miss the programe and to you and your family, merry xmas.

angel
Gethin are you and your family missing the pigs salt and pepper.

Andrew, Abersychan,
Roedd yn hyfryd clywed y Gymraeg yn cael ei siarad yn ein bro. Cadwch ati, bois, unwaith ei bod hi wedi mynd, mae ei chael hi 'n ol fel ceisio dal mwg mewn rhwyd,.. Debra, gawn ni weld dy gerdd yn y Gymraeg ? It was lovely hearing Welsh in our area. Keep it up, once it has dispappeared getting it back would be like trying to catch smoke in a net. Debra, can we see your poem in Welsh?

Angharad Griffiths Ceredigion
hello pawb. Are you missing the show? I'll send another comment very soon.

Diane Michael (Teachers wife)
Hi everyone,It's good to have David back home. Thanks for looking after him on Stack Square. There seems to be a few stories we did not see on the television. David found the art of letter writing again as I had a lovely romantic letter from No.6 Stack Square. Better than a phone call or a text message. Perhaps we can all learn from something as simple as this.

Griffiths family ex Stack Square
Hi! It's Angharad from Coal House. I hope you enjoyed the series. I wanna go back to Stack Square. What were your best bits then? It would be good to hear from you. Lots of love Angharad and familyx

Walt dinas pembs
I'd just like to add my congratulations and admiration to all the families and production crew for a superb set of programmes. Originally from a south Yorkshire mining family I know all too well the hardships that miners had to endure. My father for example was at the face for over 35 years and was also severely claustrophobic. What I found most heart rendering about the series was how quickly the families discovered a sense of 'community' and support that was so important in mining areas. Even the black humour, that saved many a dark time, was there. well done. My only regret is not being able to advise Cerdin [my cousin in law!] on how to underscore a seam, and his lovely wife Debra on how to light a fire in an open range! [I had tears rolling down my face with laughter]. Very well done all, diolch yn fawr iawn! ps to the bbc, I know that this series would go down a storm in other mining areas of britain.

Rebecca Dawes, Newport
Debbie...Awesome..no other word to describe you and your family! Come and teach me Welsh please.Diolch yn fawr!

Debra Griffiths from Coal House
Thanks for all the wonderful coments. We are now back in 2007. It feels quite weird actually, but i must say a big thanks to all of you for viewing. I will write to you soon, all my love Debra Griffiths and familyxxx

Mari-Ellen & Angharad Griffiths (from Coal House)

Steffan Griffiths
Hi everyone it's Steffan Griffiths here! Thank you for all of the good comments! After coming back to 2007 we seemed to have lost interest in television quite a lot so there's been some change in reality! I would like to thank everyone from Blaenavon and everyone else who took part in the bbc Coal House. I will promise to keep you updated on this website. Felly, diolch yn fawr iawn!

Steve from Powys

I think that family were hilarious. Im so sad the prgram has stopped because now i cant listen to there funny hapanings. It was so funny when she burnt his underpants i laughed myself to tears. And everytime Cerdyn smacked Debras bum that was funny. And i felt so sorry for Gethin when he was being taught in english i was like awww. Hope they had a good time. Cariad Siwan xxx

Vee South Wales
I loved this family, they were loving, caring, and made me laugh a lot. When cerdin was asked how many drinks he had down the pub his face was brilliant, both myself and my grandson were in stiches. Well done, will miss you all sorry to see it end.

Beti Rhondda
Have enjoyed the Coal House. I think they were all stars.. Such different families which you would have in any neighbourhood. . Had to think what we would have had for breakfast it was called Chip Chop in our house. Bread with tea and sugar.. This was during the war, and mam had to watch my brothers making sure they didn't use too much of the sugar ration. This was I suppose recycling stale bread. Well done all in the Coal House

Louise Swansea
This was a really unkind family, Debra laughing at Joe and telling the landlord about next door having a lodger too and she hoped their rent was going up as well and trying to get first bath for her family. Angharad hiding eggs and Steffan gloating about being the richest.

Fiona Wrexham
I loved every bit of that, the Griffiths were my fav family and little Rhodri phillps what a star. All the family where great well done all of you.

Mary-Jane Horgan, Cardigan, Ceredigion
Well, we all thought the whole series was brilliant and really enjoyed watching all the families in action. The Griffiths family in particular were great fun. Cerdin and Debra were wonderful - especially Debra. We say bloody good on the whole lot of them for taking part in such an innovative programme with such gusto. Anyone else who says anything different is simply mean spirited and has no sense of fun or history.

Brian Power from Neyland
I am getting totally fed up with the camera constantly on the Griffiths Family, and not enough of the other families. All the family are acting like spoilt children. Did she pay camera man to put her on film the most?

Gill from Trevethin
What a brilliant programme well done to the 3 families involved will miss all of them when the series finishes .

TonyBee from Brynmawr
Cerdin and Debra are so entertaining and funny, they are a well matched couple. Congratulations to both on being stars in an excellent BBC Wales program. They win my prize for best TV personalities. BAFTA nominations maybe, for families and program?

Tracey from Cardiff
This is how a family should be. Laughing and loving. I am grateful to see an insight into life during this time of 1927.My family were miners and I now know how hard life was for them. It also explains why people in their twenty's and thirty's looked like old men & women before their time.I would like to wish all the families well and hope they have a more comfortable life back in 2007 and beyond.

neil williams pontypool
the griffithses should have their own show go bbc do it

Jayne Cardiff
Just love the Griffiths Family!.. Debra and Cerdin are wonderful,They are so down to earth, laid back, and funny!!!Will miss them when the show end's! Myself, and my Family, are hooked!

Quentin Jones
Personally I think that this family are the pits!In particular the mother's bahaviour; laughing at Joe's misfortune and behaving like a middle aged bully! All of that rubbish about the kids not being able to do well at school because their first language isn't English is quite ridiculous seeing as they speak fluent English throughout the programme.

Ian from Swansea
Stop picking on Cerdin, he's beautiful.

Holly Rogers from Penarth
Love the Griffiths family! Their all really funny! I love cerdin the most because he makes both Deborah and the rest of my family laugh our socks off! Love this programme! Pleeeeease make a series. Everyone in Wales would watch it at least!

Viv Jones from Merthyr Tydfil
Wonderful show - proud to be Welsh. Everyone has tried so hard, a credit to Wales. I must say I have been going mad trying to work out where I've met Debra. I think it might be Leekes or somewhere as I used to be a kitchen representative, and it's driving me nuts. Debra, if you read this, big congratulations, you're a born star and please put me out of my misery

The Sanders Family from Cwmbran
Brilliant show!! Well done to BBC Wales and allthe families taking part - Although we must admit the Griffithses are our faves...Debbie and her one liners and Cerdin when he says "Yes Mr Bandford" / "No Mr Blandford" - Only down side is it should be on for an hour and every night !! Well done to you all !!!!

Helen.Morriston/Swansea
Coalhouse is FAB the whole family make sure we never miss an episode.I have to admit that the Griffiths family are me favourites, they have had so many problems to overcome in particular with their children being ill but they have carried on regardless.Fantastic viewing and well done to all the families who participated,it really makes you grateful for what we have now in our lives, hope there will be more programmes like this in the future.Well Done B.B.C.

Sara from Port Talbot
My whole family love the Griffith's, they are a laugh a minute. It must be great fun living in their house, they can always see the funny side of everything. The Griffiths are brilliant! Cerdin has lost a bit of weight mind, perhaps thats Debra's cooking! Good luck to them all.

Karen from ceredigion
I know Debra quite well and she is exactly as she is on the programme. She has a fantastic sense of humour and is very loving towards her family and friends. The bath scene was fantastic, what a legend! Da iawn i chi gyd.

chloe cwmbran
debra griffths is really funny!!!!!!

Fran (18) Ceredigion
I'm sorry but Cerdin never stops winging and wining. Debra tries her best and he never seems grateful for what she does, I mean look at his response to her killing and cooking the chicken for the whole family to eat. Cerdin seems to simply seems to laugh at everyone else's efforts.

Rachel Faga Tir y berth
Fantastic programme, I have really enjoyed watching it!! My husband took my Daughter to see where coalhouse is being filmed and they seen the griffiths family, my Daughter was really chuffed because they said "hello", she couldn't wait to get home to tell me.

Aled from Penarth
I know the Griffiths very well. I uest to live in west Wales. They are the best family ever. Debra is really good in front of the family, and they bring a lot of humor to the show.I hope they enjoyed the experience in the coal house! Oddi wrth Aled Caled. Chi'n dda iawn yn y coal house. E Williams from Cardiff
Debra Griffiths, what a star, da iawn ti hogan! She should definitely be offered something by the BBC when she finishes this, would be great to keep her on our screens.Great show all round, one of the best things to come out of BBC Wales for while, obviously well researched and planned, the houses and gardens look fantastic. A wonderful way to make Welsh history come alive.

Eleanor Lewis Barry Vale of Glamorgan
Brilliant program & well done everyone. One of my favourite moments is when Rhodri knocked the door & gave anunty Debbie the egg, bless his heart. It would make an excellent history lesson. The old tin bath brought it back for me born in 1947 that was one of the highlights of the week a bath in front of the coal fire. Also the potty under the bed. No upstairs toilet. Best wished to every one

Helen, Tonypandy
Brilliant show! Brilliant family! I wonder if they would be interested in adopting me??!!

deb abersychan;

Milly age:8
I think it was pretty cool when Debra wondered where the men were.

Amy From Aberystwyth
They are such a lovely family - a total credit to all us Cardis. They prove the timeless point that you can get through pretty much anything if you have a smile on your face and love in your heart!!

Jayne Blaenau Gwent
We are really enjoying coal house. The stars of the show are the Griffiths family, they have us all in stitches. I wish it was on every night beats all the other reality programmes by far.

Wonderful show, brilliant entertainment it's like a drug. Can't wait for the next fix. It should be on every night. The Griffiths family crease me. It must run in the family because I am her uncle and I'm worse than them all. It comes naturally to them its not just for the cameras. Well done to all the families they are all doing great.

JaneR Aberdare
Fantastic family - obviously very close, loving and happy even in 1927 conditions. I bet they're really good company.

Carys + Maz From Cilgerran
We miss Angharad, Debra and Cerdin. They're right laughs and mostly the reason we watch the show. Where are the sectret eggs today Angharad?

Katy frrom Cardiff
Debra's hilarious! She makes me laugh. The Coal House is very nteresting.

Sioned, Abertawe.
The Griffiths family are very funny, their humour may not be of the completely sanatised, politically correct public viewing variety of 2007, but probably quite authentic for 1927 where the material that fuelled humour had to be found in the daily life around us (rather than in the soaps and sitcoms) including the misfortunes of others - and Cerdin also shared his fish & chips with the Cartwrights. They are also able to laugh at themselves and each other. Laughter is the best medicine and this family are experts at it which is a bonus as they probably need it more than most with Debra's cooking. Rwyf yn cytuno- byddau clywed mwy o Gymraeg y Griffiths' yn dda,ond a'r y llaw arall fyddai llawer o'r gwylwyr ddim yn cael y pleser o ddeall 'banter' Cerdin a Debra. Mae'r tri teulu yn dda, yn wahanol iawn, mae'r Phillips'yn annwyl iawn a'r Cartwrights yn tynnu yn dda efo'i gilydd ac i weld yn ddawnus a chreadugol iawn. Gobeithio fydd llaw Joe druan yn well cyn bo hir. (I agree that it would be good to hear more Welsh from the Griffiths but on the other hand, many viewers wouldn't understand Cerdin adn Debra's banter. The three families are good, very different. The Phillips are very sweet and the Cartwrights get on well together and are talented and creative. I hope poor Joe's hand is better soon.)

Diane Michael. Blaengarw.
Every one I have spoken to love the Griffiths family. Their sense of humour is infectious. Keep it up.

Nuala Geraghty Neath
I think the programme is really interesting and shows how hard things were in the mining days. I'm actually Irish but find learning about the welsh mining days really fasinating. I would love to see a show made about the irish famine so the welsh people could see how hard things were for the irish people too.

Gwyneth and Polly from Cardigan
We know the Griffiths family and we went to the same primary school as the kids and Gwyneth used to live on the same street as them! We think that they were a bit harsh laughing at Joe but they are not any different from life here in 2007! They are certainly not play acting. Poor Geth who happened to get chicken pox in the first week! Get well soon!

Mike O'Hara from Carmarthen
Such a great show! Makes us realise how easy we've got it these days. The star of the show has to be Cerdin Griffiths, his laugh is enough to make people laugh themselves.

Judith from Haverfordwest
I think this is one of the best programmes on television, and as for Debra and co. well they are the stars cant wait for the next episode.

Huw Jones from Bedwas
Cerdin makes me laugh! The program is really interesting - the best thing on tv for ages! Looking forward to the rest of the series. Cariwch ymlaen!

Michelle Blaenafon
I love the Griffiths family , they are such a joy to watch.Debra is always so happy, she just keeps on smiling! There is a lot of history in Blaenafon, and its great to see some of that come alive on the BBC. The programme is an eye opener for many young people. I cant wait for the next episode !!

Samanatha Davies Blaenavon
The Griffiths family are always so happy. It makes you realise what our families went through and makes me feel so grateful for all the opportunities that are presented to me and my children today. The conditions in which they lived are tremendously poor, youngsters these days don't realise how lucky they have have it now, compared to them back then. We should all be watching it, cheering it on, COME ON BLAENAVON!!

Ffion Delve from cardigan
My bestest friend is on it, Angharad. We are best friends eva and Debra she is wicked i tell u. Ifeel sorry for Gethin being taught everything in Welsh and he has to do maths in english

By Mari Roberts, Llangrannog
Just to say I am thinking of Angharad Griffiths! She's one of my best friends at school and I'm missing her so much! Can't wait until she's back! Wishing the whole Griffiths family my luck.

Adam Jones
Bwced llawn o hwyl a sbri mae nhw wir off ei pennau yn debyg i siaradwyr cymraeg yn gyffredinnol . Siradwch yr iaith nawr bois

jordan from cardigan
Ilove the programme and angharad is my best m8t in the whole wide world!

Sharon Muston from Penarth
What a tonic Debra and Cerdin are. I cant stop laughing at them. The BBC should be very proud of this program and good luck to all the couples.

Lyn from Llanelli
That wasnt very nice of the Griffithses in tonight's episode laughing at Joe Catright and his hurt finger, but it was dead funny. How cool is Richie Phillips giving some of his chips to Joe's family. What a nice guy.

Jo from Penarth
I'm loving the whole programme, and this family make me laugh with them. To have so much humour within a family must be such a joy. They just seem to find the funny side of every situation (except maybe the vomit...) - even so, they all seem to be coping really well.

Rhian Ceredigion
Its really awful the way they moan about everything and laugh at everyone else. They are making welsh speaking people look really mean and nasty i hope they become nicer because its embaressing that they are making welsh speaking people like me from Ceredigion look bad.

Joe Saunders from Cardigan
I hope they will enjoy it. I'm missing Steff already. Good luck!

Maria Mustard, friend of the family
I'm not surprised that the Griffiths family have got through to the programme. They are very warm and endearing and open to new things. They are very sociable people. If there are problems with other people they generally seek to resolve them by talking rather than by having a confrontation. Debra is a natural comic. If ever you are feeling down she will make you laugh usually by coming out with some outrageous remark. I know they will miss the modern comforts that we all take for granted but they seem to be prepared for that. Although the children are into computers and computer games they also spend quite a lot of time outdoors and are involved in other activities such as singing with the choir so I think they will adapt. I know that Debra is dreading the cooking. She often tells me she can't cook in the present day so she thinks Cerdin and the children will be starved by the time they come out if they have to rely on her 1920s recipes. The family are taking the view that people will have to take them as they find them and I think they will like what they see.

Do you think they can hack it?
